Since the beginning of film making we have used technology to advance the way we see films today. Because of the technologies, cinematographers have been able to create perfect moods to the themes of the types of movies to they produce. This enabled them to effectively create different types of genres in film. According to (Jacobs, 2014) genre is a type, or category and genre films are usually easily recognizable as part of a certain genre. The use of familiar story formulas, character types, settings, and visual imagery that have symbolic implications letting the audience know beforehand what the movies is about. The different conventions used to create figures that center on the dark side of life, the forbidden, and the strange are strangely visible. The use of different style of lighting, color, and shadows in this particular horror film can make us as individuals think about our most primal fears in a new and frightening light. The way films are being made to be so realistic, makes one question the existence in our reality. Horror films or films in this genre tend to play on our fears of our own demise. The Woman in Black film tells a tale of ghostly figures and a sinister type of revenge. Jennet is haunting the Eel Marsh House. To really understand the movie I had to understand who Jennet was. From watching the film I gathered that the ghost in this movie was Jennet the sibling of Alice Drablow. Alice Drablow was married and Jennet was not and had a child out of wedlock, a son. The Drablow’s adopted her son, and in secrecy kept the truth of his birth between them. An unfortunate accident occurred one day when the child and his caretaker were riding a pony and trap and were both drowned. Jennet ends up seeing the accident happen and went crazy with grief and anger. Jennet blamed her sister Alice, and then later dies only to return in a ghoulish demented ghost form. The lighting must control what is supposed to be seen by the audience, so quick reveals and vanishes are easily available for use for The Woman in Black throughout the film. Using tight spotlights during the shooting of the film helped focus the audience on particular objects, such as the rocking chair and the audience becomes instantly aware that something is going to occur. Blackouts lights controls the suspense, as at times nothing at all can be absolutely seen directly after heightened drama. Colored lighting is rarely used within the film to give the movie a more realistic and happening now feel. Sound effects also plays a key role in the making of horror films. Horror absolutely relies a lot on things that go bump in the night, and making loud noises and screams happen frequently. The sudden loud noises enhance the experience for and audience. The slamming of doors is a repeated theme, along with the sound of the creaking of the rocking chair. The director definitely uses the sound to build up throughout a scene, getting louder towards a climax. This makes the audience aware that the sound has something to do with the Woman in Black, and as the main character begins to follow it the source of the sound and how
