During my internship at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center (STC), I gained more confidence in my decision in eventually pursuing a career in health care, either through being a researcher or a physician. I first started my internship at the University of Maryland STC in my senior year of high school as a requirement for my magnet program. The internship was a volunteer position but we performed basic tasks such as stocking each bay with supplies and saline solution, retrieving blood from the blood bank when needed, and providing blankets and socks for incoming patients. I never paid attention to the importance of these tasks until one specific incident.…

The stories we have read in class such as, “New York Day Women” by Edwidge Danticat and “The Girl with Bangs” by Zadie Smith, are both significantly influenced by society or social norms. All of these works both validate and deviate from traditional society.…

My parents emigrated to this country thirty-four years ago from Mexico. My father had a grade school education and my mother had a middle school education. They had a deep desire to improve their lives, and having that American dream everybody talks about. I was smiling the whole time as the skin around my neck was being ripped off. Well I wasn’t actually smiling and as brutal as I made it sound, it wasn’t as horrific an event now that I look back on it. The incident occurred while I was on Spring Break during my freshman year in high school. My family and I were vacationing in Gatlinburg, Tennessee;which if I might add we’ve been there about eight times since I was seven years old. I remember clearly that day down to the exact temperature.…

I think everyone can relate to some sort experience that has happened in your life when you thought that all was well, but the reality was that it wasn’t. It took something really tragic to happen for you to find out that someone you loved had secrets. All of the things that you thought of that person is shattered into a million pieces and you’re left there trying to sort through them trying to choose the ones you want to hang on too and the ones that you would sweep up and throw away forever. The conversations that you have with those you love sometimes still leave unanswered answers to why someone that was supposed to take care of you decided that someone was more important than you. It was March 1st, 1993, my Grandmother has passed away 4 days earlier.…
Many people grow up having a normal childhood, I being one of them. I grew up living in a warm, and welcoming household with my mother, father, and older brother. As a child, we all thought we had no worries in the world. Everything was peaceful and taken care of by our parents. We all eventually grow up, and have to become more responsible.…
