February 12, 2017 Genre Analysis
The movie that I chose for my genre analysis was a horror classic, The Shining. The film was made in the year 1980, starring Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, Shelly Duvall as Wendy Torrance, and Danny Lloyd as Danny Torrance. The film was directed by Stanley Kubrick and screen written by Stanley Kubrick and Diane Johnson. Critics originally poorly reviewed the film, however with time the film became a classic. The theme used is isolation and insanity. Shortly after the opening scenes of the film, the Torrance family can be viewed traveling to the hotel, during this scene viewers may notice the isolation of being in the Rockies. One month in their stay viewers may notice that Jack is already beginning to descend into madness from the cabin fever of being isolated in the hotel. Jack’s behavior is evident of this when there is long close up camera shots of him staring off into space. Later a scene is shown of Jack going to the Gold room and orders drinks from a bartender. At this point, Jack is seeing people and talking to people that the viewers cannot tell whether they are real or not, further showing the theme of insanity. It is only later in the film that viewers realize the hotel itself is a haunted entity, during a scene where Jack was locked in the kitchen’s pantry he promises a previous winters keeper that he will murder Danny and Wendy, after making this promise, the pantry door unlocks and Jack is free again. These examples from the film provide the viewer with the themes of isolation and insanity which are typical conventions of the horror genre. the setting of the film is an isolated hotel with a dark past, which really supports the theme of isolation and Jacks descent into insanity. The sound attribute is very suspenseful throughout the film as well, during the opening scenes, and throughout the movie, very suspenseful music is played which is a typical convention of the horror genre. The films iconography employs props such as an axe, a wave of blood, and Jacks menacing insane face. The narrative structure is also typical for the most part for that the protagonist survives the antagonist. For example, Wendy and her son, Danny, end up escaping Jack and the hotel at the end of the film and everything seems to go back to normal for them. The camera work also
