The Genpei War was the climax between the Taira and Minamoto clans over the dominance of the Imperial court and control of Japan. The war occurred during the 1180-85, Medieval Japan. The Minamoto and Taira fought for five years. Finally, the Taira defeated and Yoritomo found Japan's first warrior government. Yoritomo then proceeded to convince eastern warriors to join him by promising them guaranteed jobs and land. The Genpei War was about warriors independence from the imperial government. It ended with Yoritomo restoring peace and ending the civil
