The Genocide was finally stopped by the Rwandan Government, “The government of Rwanda surprised everyone by declaring a moratorium on arrests of suspected genocidaires” (History. Com Staff). This was aimed to arrest everyone who had anything to do with the more than 800,000 deaths in the short 100 days of killing. The killings of the Tutsis were done in horrific ways. The most common way was with a machete, this was aimed to kill the Tutsis quick and easy, another way was starvation which was aimed for a long a painful death by the Hutus. After these horrible killings most of the people who were accused of participating were sent to trial by the government which they used,“the court system know as Gaaca , leading to 1.2 million cases being tried” (History. Com Staff). Rape during the genocide was a huge factor also, “The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) also determined that the widespread rapes committed during the Rwandan genocide may also be considered an act of torture and genocide on their own. Not only did the genocide leave people in shock during the genocide it left shock after, and still till this day leaves people in shock to this day. “The effect of the genocide posed on the people is immeasurable, The people were tortured and terrorized” (“Rwanda 1994”). People today are still struggling to get the pictures of the genocide out of there heads. The major thing that is still lingering with the people of Rwanda is PTSD, “Due to the traumatic experience caused over 26% of Rwanda population suffered from PTSD” (“Rwanda 1994”) PTSD is one of the most harsh things a human can get after witnessing a genocide, it is like a picture in the head always reminding you of what happen. Even though everything is done, people are still struggling and will never forget the horrible things they saw or what were put through.
V. Conclusion
During the genocide the Hutus targeted the Tutsis for extermination until they were stopped by the government which then arrested all suspected genocidaires; today, Rwanda is still recovering from all the brutal killings, rapes and torture that the Hutus were responsible for.
The genocide of Rwanda was one of the most harsh things that has occurred in the world. In the 100 days Genocide more than 800,000 people were killed and many others raped and tortured for their lives. This Genocide will be with the people forever and will never be forgotten in the country of
