One of the reasons why genocide is the worst outcome of war is because of …show more content…
In “Armed and Underage” by Jeffrey Gettleman, Gettleman states, “The Germans drafted adolescents when they got desperate toward the end of World War II. So did Iran, which used boys as young as 12 to clear minefields during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.” In other words the use of child soldiers is not a new problem that has occurred during wars. Therefore child soldiers are the worst part of a war because the world has been using underage soldiers for a little over seventy years, meaning that child soldiers have been sucked into the world of war and destruction for multiple generations. Furthermore, in “Armed and Underage” by Jeffrey Gettleman, Gettleman states, “Their growth has been stunted by conflict-induced famines, their psyches damaged by all the killings they have witnessed. ‘What do I enjoy?’ Awil asks. ‘I enjoy the gun.’” In short, the child soldiers have become accustomed to the violence and the guns. This shows that underage soldiers are the worst part of a war because kids are supposed to see the world through imaginative eyes not despair, so the war is taking away the kids childhood and making them grow up earlier then they have too. However, Gettleman also states, “But perhaps most significant is the ongoing trial in the Hague, a city in the Netherlands, of former Liberian President Charles Taylor.” By extension the trial of former president Charles Taylor, was a trial that prosecuted Taylor for his use of child soldiers. This shows that even though underage soldiers are terrible that at least the people responsible for employing the kids as soldier are being punished for their horrendous crimes and the casualty count isn't as high as when a leader commits genocide because the damage has been done and there's nothing that can be done to get the dead
