Think about all of the foods, medications, and other products that we as a society have consumed over the years. Now think about all of the products that our grandparents and great grandparents consumed in their lifetimes. How have these products changed over the last 50-70 years? These products have changed dramatically due to the introduction of genetic modifications. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have created great controversy over the last few years. In one article entitled “Genetically Modified Organisms: Pros and Cons of GM Foods” by Janelle Vaesa, she introduces that “according to the Office of Science at the U.S. Department of Energy, genetically modified foods taste better, have increased nutrients, resist disease and pest, and have a faster output”(Vaesa). However, GMOs are not entirely safe either. Andrea Donsky, in her article “What’s so bad about GMOs? Top Ten Reasons to Avoid Them”, says “GMOs have been connected with an increased risk of some types of cancer” (Donsky). Not only do these products pose possible health risks, they also have potential of having environmental and economic risks as well. Because of these risks, the United States government should stop the sell and ultimately the production of genetically modified organisms. To understand just how much foods have changed over the last 50-70 years, one must look back at some of the things that our great-grandparents consumed during their daily lives.
