Think about all of the foods, medications, and other products that we as a society have consumed over the years. Now think about all of the products that our grandparents and great grandparents consumed in their lifetimes. How have these products changed over the last 50-70 years? These products have changed dramatically due to the introduction of genetic modifications. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have created great controversy over the last few years. According to Newton and The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM), “genetically modified goods can cause issues with fertility, the failure of the immune system, accelerated aging, and changes in the liver, kidneys, and gastrointestinal system” (Newton 91). In addition to the research findings by the AAEM, a group of Chinese researchers found that individuals that consumes GMOs possessed miRNA (micro Ribonucleic Acid) in their blood. These researches say that “these miRNA could attribute to disruptions in cellular function, an increased risk of diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as an increase of allergies” (Newton 91-92). In Goldbas’ article, she says, “genetic modifications engender ethical issues such as creating designer babies and an unlimited extension of the human life span thus violating the creator’s will” (Goldbas 21).
