While this was not an issue in the time of Sinclair’s novel, it has become a very controversial topic in the modern world. Studies have found that these organisms in food may be an unnecessary risk to a person’s health. However, the tradeoff of this small risk in exchange for the many improvements of today’s food production is quite adequate. Not all food issues can be resolved at the same time and this is one that will continued to be attended to until a resolution is reached.
Even with the presence of genetically modified organisms in some foods, the labor and food production system today is far superior to that of old due to improvements such as food labels and availability. Not only do people have a better understanding of the composition of products, but they also have food continuously accessible, even in rough times.
