Genetically Modified Organisms Did you know that kiwis are a man-made fruit? Or that non-organic vegetables and fruits are covered in dye in order to make it look more appealing to the consumer? GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism, which is a new organism, not found in nature that was created by scientists. (Winter Ridge.) There are many different unnatural toxins that are put and injected into our foods. Fruits and vegetables are injected with chemicals and made to last for weeks to get to the businesses and markets looking fresher than ever. Because these plants are being sprayed, they are also harming the bees who pollinate them. Medical problems are arising that never came up a few decades back, and we are hearing more terms such as “gluten free.” There are many problems causing health and environment issues because of genetically modified foods that we have never seen before. The first breakthrough of a genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) was in 1973 when two scientists by the name of Stanley Cohen and Herbert Boyer worked together to create a new organism from two different organisms. They cut a gene from each different organism and pasted it together. A year later two other scientists used the same procedure on animals. They used it specifically on mice embryos.
