Genetically Modified Organisms Did you know that kiwis are a man-made fruit? Or that non-organic vegetables and fruits are covered in dye in order to make it look more appealing to the consumer? GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism, which is a new organism, not found in nature that was created by scientists. (Winter Ridge.) There are many different unnatural toxins that are put and injected into our foods. Fruits and vegetables are injected with chemicals and made to last for weeks to get to the businesses and markets looking fresher than ever. In 2007 there was a study done in Portland, Oregon about the surrounding rivers. They found that the wild salmon living in these rivers had tons of synthetic chemicals in their systems. (Meadows) Fishes are not the only species infected. Virginia State confirms that along with fishes- turtles, frogs, mussels, and water birds are also victims of herbicide poisoning. Another study done by The University of Washington states that a popular herbicide, Roundup, is killing tadpoles. The herbicide killed three out of five frog species that were tested in an ecosystem. One country that is very thought-provoking is Germany. Germany has recently chosen to ban the use of GMO’s in their country along with other members in the EU, (European Union) such as France, Poland, and Scotland. Scotland recently said that one of the main reasons they banned GMO’s is because it will harm the countries “clean and green” brand. “Scotland is known around the world for our beautiful natural environment – and banning growing genetically modified crops will protect and further enhance our clean, green status,” Rural affairs secretary Richard Lochhead said in a
