Currently, 70% to 80% of the food we eat are genetically modified organisms that have been produced in a lab. Genetically modified organisms (GMO) is any living organism whose genetic DNA has been changed using technology (Khan, S.J 2012). The DNA of food would be change in order to achieve a certain look that would sell more as well having a higher survival rates. GMO’s does not need the use of pesticides or toxins because they were genetically engineered to resist the harsh nature of weather, bacteria and animals. The technology in which GMO’s are created has been around for more than 20 years and have created much controversy. Non-GMO supporters have claimed that GMO is a precursor to cancer and major health concerns for our bodies. When GMO’s was first introduced to society, some have claimed that the foods have physically changed their health. Despite much controversy regarding GMOs, the introduction of GMO food has helped farmers financial, provided food for everyone, and helped save consumers some money. The introduction of GMO’s into the consumer food market has helped farmers’ financially. Before GMO seeds where planted, farmers would plant normal seeds that they have collected from previous crops. Once the normal seeds have been planted the farmer would be required to spend money on fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides to ensure that the plant would be able to survive during growth.
