Genetically Modified Organisms Controversy

There is quite a bit of controversy surrounding the safety of transgenic organisms. Some people believe that bioengineered organisms and products are highly beneficial to our society and population in various ways, while others believe that the whole process in general is immoral and ultimately unsafe. We encounter transgenic organisms in our daily lives primarily through our food supply, and many issues with transgenic organisms are beginning to arise within the agricultural community because of this. Although there is currently no animals that we consume associated with this process, there are several modified crops that are used in our food supply or are marketed for daily commodities. But the main concern with these transgenic organisms is their potential for harming or altering the human body. Many researchers are concluding that consuming these modified foods will make the human body resistant to antibiotics that fight against certain diseases. There is also controversy regarding the fact that these genetically modified organisms will make us more susceptible to certain allergens. In many instances, the component causing the allergic reactions still remains in the new organisms after modification, so there are current on-going studies to prove that these allergens may be amplified after organism modification. Also, transgenic organisms are a relatively new discovery within our society, so it is impossible for us to know of the potential long term effects that it may have. Transgenic crops are grown commercially in roughly thirty countries, with about 300 million Americans consuming these crops on a regular basis.
