Genetically Modified Organisms: A Needed Technology
The topic of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) has been a very big controversy in the recent years because people are worried about the possible negative effects these new organisms will have on the environment but also how GMO’s could possibly be able to save millions of lives. Malnutrition and starvation are some of the biggest problems in the modern world. According to the World Health Organization “an estimated 250,000 to 500,000 vitamin A-deficient children become blind every year, half of them dying within 12 months.” According to the World Food Programme, “Some 805 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life…(the) majority of the world 's hungry people live in developing countries.” With these large numbers, it is clear to see how big of an issue these problems are. The solution to significantly drop these numbers is genetically modified foods because they have have more nutrients, higher yields and have better implications for the environment compared to their organic counterparts.
Genetically modified organisms have more nutrients than their organic parts. They have more nutrients because they take foods that don 't have certain nutrients and have the genes of the nutrients inserted into the organism.
