Genetic engineering, also called genetic modification, is the process of directly alternating an organism’s DNA in its genome using biotechnology. Genetic modification has been in practice for many years in the domestication of plants and animals, but despite its unprecedented progress, gene editing in humans, especially in embryonic stem cells, is one of the major controversies in health and science field nowadays. In the article from The Guardian, “Genetically modified human embryos should be allowed, expert group says”, it stated that genetic engineering should be permitted to prevent genetically inheriting diseases, and to gain basic understanding of early embryonic stages and gene involvement in human reproduction. In opposition to this, the Al Jazeera’s article “US scientists urge ban on human genetic modification”, mentioned the statement from the US genetics scientists for a moratorium or ban on genetic modification of children, due to its irreversible on humanity, as well as the monumental consequences on the eco-system.
The Guardian’s article, in favor of genetic modification, described the evidences of the potential scientific benefits of human genome edition for research and human health when all safety procedures are followed thoroughly. The article is based on the statement issued by the Hinxton Group; a global organization of stem cell researchers, bioethicists and policy experts, to allow permission of gene modification under safety and moral standards.…
