What are Genetically Modified Foods? GMOs or Genetically Modified Organisms, are plants or a meat product that has altered DNA from scientists in a laboratory. In this process, scientists gather the DNA of other organisms and they force them into what they are modifying. Some examples from this are that some plants are injected with DNA that causes the plants to develop insecticides to fight insects that try to eat them, thus increasing the life of this plant so that it can provide the food that the farmers need. This would never had naturally occurred. Another example is that with GMOs, they can make fruits and vegetables grow bigger and also make them rot less often. There has been a lot of controversy on whether the United States Government should pass a law to label all foods that have been genetically altered. This has been a real big issue because GMOs effect everyone who eats them. According to registered dietitian Carole Bartolotto's article, it states, "Did you know that you have been enrolled in the largest research study ever conducted in the United States but you never signed a consent form or agreed to participate? That's because since 1996 you -- and basically everyone you know -- have been eating genetically modified foods."(Bartolotto, 2013, p.1) Mostly everyone has eaten a genetically modified foods and a question that we all have is: Are they safe to eat? Some pros of these GMOs are that they can enhance the flavor and quality, they can have better nutrition, and they can fight off diseases better as well. Some examples of this is that scientists can make the food taste sweeter or more bitter. Also, scientists can insert vitamins and minerals so that people can get their nutrition in foods that they normally eat. Furthermore, scientists can genetically make the immune system of plants stronger so that the plants can survive
