Genetically Modified Babies Research Paper

Since the late 1900’s genetically modified babies has been of interest among large quantity of the world’s population. Genetically modified babies are a “baby whose genetic makeup has been selected in order to eradicate a particular defect or to ensure that a particular gene is present” (Oxford Dictionary, 2015). The creation of genetically modified babies was originally created to eradicate inheritable diseases of a child before the development of the embryo begun. This technology has allowed children to live a healthy extensive life. However, individual have begun to abuse the use of the technology by changing their child’s hair color/ texture, intelligence, and eye color to fit society standards as “beautiful”. However, achieving “beauty” is not without its cost because since those who are naturally born cannot genetically modify their genes with current technology. Individuals try to fit into society's standard of “beauty” that is created based on genetically modified babies who may lead to an increase in suicides, binge eating, and anorexia especially amongst the adolescents. In a research conducted Shelly Grabe, Janet Hyde and Monique Ward, found that 50% of young women reported being dissatisfied with their own bodies (Grabe, Ward, & Hyde, 2013). By using other means like cosmetic surgery on themselves to become beautiful or starving themselves will eventually have detrimental effects to their health. The technology of genetically modifying babies will intensify the desires of those who want a “perfect” child to genetically modify theirs and the desire to perfect them. Genetically modified babies will lead to false idea of what beauty is and a negative impact on the self-confidence of women and men which will lead to the increase of suicides and psychological behaviors. If individual continue to modify their child into the “perfect” being it will intensify the social implications of body image. However, as society changes many people want to fit into the social standard of beauty. As result, many parents are now modifying their child to have perfect physical features. As the population of genetically modified babies grown based on society's standard this will cause create socio- economic division in which only the wealthy will be able to gain access to these options. The may also lead to the end of liberal democracy which states that every individual has something to offer. Lastly, as GMB’s are now create as the most beautiful being and will raise society's current standard of beauty in which many individual will try to reach societies standards.
