Informative Speech Video Assignment My informative speech’s specific purpose was to inform my classmates about genetic testing and how it relates to cancer. I feel like I achieved my purpose well, but would have done better if we had more time for our informative speech. Genetic testing is a complex topic and is hard to fit into a five-minute speech. Overall, I believe I did well in teaching my classmates about genetic testing and cancer. My introduction in this speech went much better than my demonstration speech introduction. My first introduction was weak and was not delivered as well as my introduction in this speech. I improved by introduction by gaining attention and previewing all the main points. In my first speech, I did not preview all of my main points and used a boring fact as an attention getter. In this speech, I discussed my personal experience with the whole process which helped gained interest and a need. My oral citations helped me establish my credibility. My sources helped me convey facts and my information in a more effective manner. I discussed how The National Human Genome Research Institute’s article described what genetic testing actually is. I also discussed an article titled, What are the pros and cons of Genetic Screening. This article helped my audience understand how genetic testing can …show more content…
My transitions helped me deliver my speech more effectively and clearly. In each of my transitions, I would review what I discussed and then preview what I was going to talk about. For example, I stated “We’ve discussed what genetic testing is and who should get it done, now let’s discuss how genetic testing can help you”. This helped my audience by reminding them of my main points. My last transition was “We have discussed genetic testing and my personal experience; now let’s summarize briefly”. This made it clear to my audience that I was reaching the end of my

I will be analyzing Laura M. Purdy ’s essay on “Genetics and Reproductive Risk” and Jeff McMahan’s essay “The morality of screening for disability”. It is now possible to check for genetic disorders by looking for changes in the person’s DNA. It is known as the power of genetic testing, which now includes over a thousand tests designed to detect disease, a number that is projected to increase by the hundreds in the next few years. The articles “Huntington’s Disease”, from NYTimes.com, “The DNA Age”, by Amy Harmon, and “Fearing Punishment for Bad Genes”, by Kira Peikoff, define the characteristics and symptoms of Huntington’s disease, and also demonstrate the positive and negative results for receiving genetic testing. The article “The DNA Age” focuses more on Pathos, or the emotional side of the argument, and therefore was more interesting and heart-wrenching than the other two. “Huntington’s Disease” and “Fearing Punishment for Bad Genes” focus more on Logos, or the logical side of the debate. The first article focuses primarily on statistics, and the third focuses on the consequences of receiving genetic testing. The articles create a feeling of sympathy for those affected with genetic diseases, as they demonstrate how difficult their lives are.…

For my informative speech I talked about adoption and parts of the process that you have to go through. To prepare for this speech I got my props first or my idea of what props I was going to use. After I had picked my props I picked my points based upon my props so that way I could easily incorporate my props into my speech. I then got all my information on my notecards and practiced a lot with my notecards to try to memorize more of it, so its not just me looking at my notecards the whole speech. When I was up in front of the class I felt more comfortable and relaxed.…

Nevertheless, I knew that I would achieve some form of catharsis if I took this assignment as seriously as a possibly could. From watching the persuasive speech, it is a recurring theme in my process of watching myself speak that I am much more sympathetic of myself after given said speech. What I immediately notice is that certain planned maneuvers such as the introduction weren’t always as clear as I wanted them to be. The flash cards that I help up might have been more effective if I had less content on them.…

Although the time-length of the presentation was much longer than my first speech. Since I felt better prepared and more confident with the speech outline, I held better eye contact than in my first speech and I used a little bit more hand gestures while I was talking. The only thing I would have liked to done better in my parts of the presentation is to have better transitions between my partners and myself. In my final presentation of the semester, I gave a persuasive speech about why everyone should use the metric system.…

The thesis statement is a very, very important part of the essay. In their book entitled, Writing: A College Handbook" James Heffernan, John Lincoln, and Janet Atwill clearly explains the following: "A statement of thesis answers your exploratory question and expresses the main point of your essay my making a precise, specific assertion about the topic. A thesis statement expresses your unique insight or way of explaining a subject and often forecasts how you will develop and organize your text." These two presentations help me figure out many problems I have on speech. In order to give a better speech, I have to make some changes. To get more familiar with the text, I should write the speech as earlier as I can. Besides, in order to avoid those unfavorable gestures, I will practice in front of the mirror, and try to use more efficient gestures to help others understand my speech better. In general, I learn a lot from the class, even though I still need to improve, at least, I am proud enough to stand in front of others.…

Another key learning moment I had was learning that I should let go and not let the fear of public speaking hold me back. I believe learning that helps improve confidence. The reason for that as the books explains that it is a reason to channel all the nervous energy you have into a great speech. For example, if I compare the informative speech with the speech before it which was the family history speech I could see improvement with confidence up in the front of the room and also I wasn’t as nervous as I was for the family history speech which I think showed in the fact that I had a little more confidence as I was speaking. In addition, I also learned that notecards aren’t a way of having your speech in front of you but instead a tool to help guide you as you speak.…

Compared to the personal speech assignment, I felt the informative speech, in general, is a more challenging assignment. Since it basically combines a research paper and a speech, it was very time-consuming to finish all the requirement, especially it was in the midterm period. But after all, I found a way to balance the time to finish this assignment and gave a effective speech to the class. And I found myself gradually gain experience and confidence in the speech class. Based on the previous speech experience and recommendation from the professor and classmates, this time I used more strategies from the 4-steps methods.…

My initial topic was about how to survive in the jungle, but it didn't satisfy my need to empress my audience. So, I didn't choose the topic early, or to be exact I switched it at the last minute; therefore I couldn't organize myself. Also, I went to my friend house, so I can use some help because my English is not at the level that allows me to astonish my audience.…
