Throughout my school career, I have always been exploding with questions about the ins and outs of the natural world and as I have gotten older, this fascination has developed into a curiosity for life at a molecular level. It blows my mind how such complex organisms function as a result of the instructions from the tiny molecule that is DNA; how can it not fascinate you how an entire organism is dictated by the sequence of 4 singles bases? The content this degree will cover, for me, is really exciting as I'd be engaging in a subject that is essentially in its infancy and at the forefront of life-changing scientific discovery.
Genetics is a huge interest of mine so I completed an online course-The Genomics Era by St George's Hospital. I took a lot from the experience, I enjoyed interacting with other like-minded individuals through discussions and discovered a passion for genetic testing, consequences of genetic mutations and cancer genomics. The course forced me to also consider the ethics of various genomic collection methods which I'd previously overlooked and I saw the difference I could make for people

Nick Lane is an author that has been recommended to me so I am currently sourcing some of his material to read. This initiative and willingness to learn makes me well-equipped for the demanding nature of the course and will keep me motivated throughout. I completed the Biology Olympiad to demonstrate my improved approach to unfamiliar problems; I found the cell biology and biochemistry sections most enjoyable and ultimately I achieved a Highly Commended which I am extremely proud of. This year, I aim to spread my enthusiasm for biochemistry by aiding Year 12 and lower school in their studies by volunteering as a subject mentor; last year I gave up my time to mentor a Year 11 student struggling with GCSE

Extracurricular activities help students develop various interests that allow a student to be more active outside of the classroom. Extracurricular activities can also help students apply classroom knowledge to real world situations. I’ve participated in many extracurricular activities that pertained to my interest in medicine, and because of this, I’m able to use my knowledge of science classes to hopefully pursue a career in the medical field. Since my lifetime goal is to change the world through medicine, my courses and extracurricular activities have helped me prepare for my chosen field of study. My courses I’ve taken and extracurricular activities I’ve participated in include AP Biology, Anatomy/Physiology, and the purposeful walks sponsored by HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America).…

In principle, the discovery of the structure of DNA has accentuated many scientific branches, including biotechnology and genetics (Portin, 2014). Today, studying the inheritance of double helix is even more crucial, as we all know that, biological systems and living organisms are transforming dramatically. DNA as an informative macromolecule with its distinctive model provides researchers with a platform to carry out intensive experiment to counter genetic imperfection, apply immunology and develop pharmaceutical therapies. Again, I would highly recommend this group to the Committee of Carleton Prize for…

The experiences in the Biology 230 course will certainly continue to influence me in my understand of and how I approach topics in following biology and science courses. The reason why I say this is that the process that information is taught in the lecture course was a bit different from how some other courses would normally be taught. Comparing this course to previously biology and chemistry courses, this course focuses on the why rather than what is the answer. This certainly helps as it makes up need to find a connection to why some is the way it is, which benefits many of the different topics that are taught through the course.…

Tamara, Prior to this unit I was not familiar with the legalities with genetic testing nor had I heard of any incidence within my organization. I agree with your discussion post, the manager likely was violating the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (GINA). According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), “Title II of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (GINA), which prohibits genetic information discrimination in employment, took effect on November 21, 2009.” The law prohibits employees from being fired, discriminated against, paid, promoted, or laid off due to their genetic information.…

. There is a high possibility that the words in the first sentence were not understood by many people living in the United States. However, those who did understand it, serve a purpose in many people's lives, especially if they go on to be interpreters. In America's healthcare system, it is required to have interpreters present with patients that are not fluent in English so when a doctor is consulting them, they have a clear understanding of the information. Genetic counselors are the same as interpreters.…

Having spent a substantial part of my year being there for a dear friend suffering from stage 4 colon cancer and seeing her condition worsen, my appreciation for the promising world of genetics has amplified. The need for more research on the molecular staging of cancer for example or the correlation between phenotype and the discrete genetic mutations present at a particular pre-malignant stage, will lead to more accurate prognosis, therapeutic intervention, and treatment targeted for a precise genetic profile. With these theories in mind, I am determined to pursue a career contributing to the personalization of healthcare, prediction of disease and its prevention. With a BSc in Medical Genetics, I have grown with love and fascination for…
