Genetic Modification Of A Child Essay

The concept of a human’s ability to create a completely customized child has been an idea that has circled the scientific community for ages. Just in the last century, technological advances have made it possible to conduct a variety of experiments in order to answer the question of whether or not it is possible to create a baby whose genes have been modified before it is even out of the womb. Numerous experiments and trials that have taken place over the past few decades have helped the medical community inch closer to answering the question. Although the idea of genetic modification of a child that is still in the womb sounds completely taboo and futuristic, going to a local hospital in order to choose the chromosomes for a child’s genetic blueprint may be closer to actualization than anticipated. Trials for this experiment have been tested over the last couple of decades, but because of the many flaws and errors that have been encountered, it was only last year that the first completely synthetic designer chromosome was successfully created. One such drawback would be the accidental abortion of a child if the process is not done right. Consequences could also occur later in the child 's development as it is still unknown whether or not the process would affect the children as they grow or if it would affect their gene pool in the future. Mistakes are a possibility due to the difficulty of evaluating the purpose of every individual gene.
