Genetic Modification In Children

Superior Essays
Approximately 3 million children have been injured and/or broke several bones that could have been fixed easily if technology was advanced enough. For example, children who have broken their bones could rapidly heal their injuries and get back to being active again. One possible way of achieving this feat is genetic modification. Genetic modification allows the total control of DNA which results in varying mutations that could prevent any undesirable traits appearing in children. This achievement was only thought of as a pipe dream in science fiction, but it is actually turning into a reality in society. With this type of technology, children would be able to accomplish more in their lives and be successful in society. Genetically designing …show more content…
An example of this would be a person who has the qualities of a good person. Several personality traits that can benefit society as a whole would be having more friendly, charismatic, and trusting people in society. A person who is friendly will be more willing to help others in need when a situation calls for it. For example, the person saw a crime in progress and they would immediately call the police as well as try to stop the crime from happening to protect the people around this person. In like manner, having a charismatic person would definitely help in times of crisis and need, such as a famine or a global attack. This type of person would encourage and mend broken moral which would result in people feeling healed and happy to face the situation or to not lose hope in the face of despair. Another type of person that could help society is the addition of trusting people in society. Trusting people in society would definitely help with the deception and manipulation that is rampant throughout the world and to make sure people aren’t negatively affected by this type of behavior. Despite all this, there are people that wish to harm others just for their benefit or just for fun. The type of people that fit this category are sociopaths and psychopaths. These type of people would go out of their way to just make another person’s life miserable to benefit themselves. However, with the use of genetic modification, these type of people wouldn’t exist to make other people’s lives miserable and have society thrive without any negativities. Genetic modification brings great benefit to society and it would also apply to children as

Genetic engineering used to be the thing the scientists experimented on plants and animals but now humans. I dont think its right to change the way people live life just to either look a little better or be a little smarter. It's okay in some situations, for instance when someone has really bad pain and it is never ending. We need something to fix it that is not pain killers. Instead we should just have surgery and never feel that amount of pain again but just enough pain to the point where we don't hurt yourself without knowing it (Doc 2).…

Walter Glannon explores several moral problems with genetic enhancement in his article “Genetic Enhancement,” published in Glannon’s book, From Genes and Future people: Philosophical Issues in Human Genetics (and later in Bioethics Principles, Issues, and Cases.) Glannon believes that “gene therapy is permissible if it is intended to ensure or restore normal functions, but it is morally illegitimate if it is aimed at enhancing functions beyond normal.” (577) Glannon, a professor of bioethics and philosophy at the University of Calgary, holds the Canada Research Chair in Biomedical Ethics and Ethical Theory at the University of Calgary in Alberta. He is well known for publishing 4 books and over 27 articles related to bioethics and philosophy.…

Should We Allow Genetic Engineering of Humans? Genetic engineering is a burgeoning technology that has been surging in development and popularity within the last few years. Genetic engineering is the altercation of genes in an organism. Humans have been doing this for millennia through process of selective breeding since the dawn of agriculture. In modern times, we have made a lot of headway on the development of technologies that make the process easier.…

In a study titled “Public and Scientists’ Views on Science and Society,” by Pew Research Center, eighty three percent of people thought that genetic modification for babies to make the baby more intelligent was inappropriate and that it was taking medical advances way to far. (Figure 2) However, people were split on the topic of genetic modification to remove diseases. The importance of this information is that it underlines that a majority of people are not okay with genetically enhancing traits in a baby as it would give it an advantage in the world that many others would not have. The information also allows us to see that genetic modification to remove diseases is something might be favorable and not looked down upon by society.…

For scientists who are waiting for an alternative to existing genome editing tools, Crispr-cas9 is the solution which is comparatively easy and effective in using. Crisper allows the researcher to edit, target, excise and stitch genes of their choice between two end cuts. Crispr has the potential to make such advances which researchers used to dream about. It worked so well, scientists began to issue ethical statements for its use particularly about the power of Crispr to change germline in humans which presents a hotly debatable issue. Genome editing in human germline could have unpredictable effects on future generations.…

Nicholas Staropoli is the associate director of the Genetic Literacy Project. He has a Master of Arts in biology from DePaul University and has a Bachelors of Science degree in biomedical science from Marist College. The article, “With Global Gene Editing Slowing Down, What’s the Future of ‘Designer Babies?,’” states that not enough research has been done to safely edit the genes of human embryos. While scientists have an idea about which genes control certain traits such as body type, many different traits play a role in whether a child is say, athletic or not, such as coordination or competitiveness. For this reason, to control a whole aspect of a child’s abilities is unsafe and could lead to other risks.…

In “Genetic Interventions and the Ethics of Enhancement of Human Beings,” Julian Savulescu states that we are morally obligated to use genetic enhancement, specifically regarding our children. He argues this by proposing the idea that genetic enhancement is no different than environmental enhancements or treating disease in that they all breed the same result: improved wellbeing of those affected. Savulescu also discusses an objection to genetic enhancement on the grounds that it will lead to a split in society between those who are enhanced and those who are not, and those who are not will face discrimination. Although this is a valid objection, I am opposed to genetic enhancement because ultimately I believe that one cannot definitively prove…

The Case Against Perfection In order to cater an ever changing society, and as science continues to progress, many claim genetically modifying humanity is a no brainer. Though, Michael Sandel would heavily disagree, claiming, “Changing our nature to fit the world, rather than the other way around, is actually the deepest form of disempowerment. It distracts us from reflecting critically on the world, and deadens the impulse to social and political improvement,” (97). Instead of changing humanity, he proposes alterations to society, in order to custom nature.…

Some believe that giving parents the option of genetically engineering their baby will result in eugenics driven by egoism. People might take advantage of germline manipulation by creating embryos that will be their own idea of what is perfect, thus objectifying and commodifying children. Some opposers even say that because these embryos will not have a say in whether they want to be modified or not, their rights will be taken away. Furthermore, regulating laws ensuring that genetic modification is used only for the correction of genuinely medical genetic conditions as opposed to enhancing a child’s appearance will be nearly impossible. Rich parents will use…
