This is a quote by a famous journalist by the name of Michael Specter. Mr. Specter, along with many other respected members of the scientific community, has formed an opinion of Genetic modification. Genetic Modification has been done for thousands of years but most people don’t even realize this. Genetically modified organisms are not limited to scientists adding or removing genes in a controlled lab setting but are a broad and general term that can be applied to any animal that has been changed by humans to meet our needs. …show more content…
Many people fear the idea of enhancing our bodies beyond the limits set by nature. Most People have a sense of morality that attributes to all the choices that person would make in any given situation that stem from something in their life like religion. These ideals, especially when religious, see changing our genetic make-up as changing our very humanity. They believe we were constructed the way we are because that is how we are supposed to be. Not all scientists agree with this form of genetic modification either. Some believe that the changes made to our genetic code could be completely irreversible. This genetic alteration also brings the fear of what some would call “Super weeds” or “Super bugs”. These “Super” creations revolve around the idea of uniform gene pools. This means that there would be an almost unstoppable weed or virus that could potentially wipe out the affected species as a whole causing extinction due to a lack of diversity in the genetic code of the species giving no room for an immune gene to spread rapidly enough to combat this threat. While these situations are concerning and understandably something to be conscious of they hold no facts at their core and are purely based on opinion
