Genetic Engineering Research Paper Rough Draft Imagine this: You are sitting down, and eating a cheeseburger that someone has made just for you. You put on the ketchup, mustard, pickles, all of the toppings that you love and desire. Now stop and think: What if it were possible that a person could make as many cheeseburgers as he/she wanted based on one cell from the animal it came from? This process is known as Genetic Engineering. Genetic Engineering is the form of engineering that modifies an organism by changing the cells and DNA of that organism. Genetic engineering should be allowed in society with a few modifications. They believe that it is wrong for someone to change the DNA of an organism for scientific research. That side believes of the protection of the organisms from being used as tools of scientific research (Arnold). Some scientists also agree with this. A person going against cloning or editing genes would ask why would someone want to edit to prevent disease. Rudolf J. an MIT Biology professor claims that this will cause problems in the future (Kolata pg 3.). “Even in the most severe cases, involving diseases like Huntington 's in which a single copy of a mutated gene inherited from either parent is enough to cause the disease with 100 percent certainty, editing poses ethical problems.” “It is unacceptable to mutate normal embryos,” he says, “ For me, that means there is no application.” (Kolata pg 3.) Dr. George Q. Daley, a stem cell researcher and a doctor at Harvard claims, “ This is an unsafe procedure and should not be practiced at this time, and perhaps never. A group of American researchers also published what they have found out in the Science Journal Magazine. “Current knowledge about genes and their interactions was limited and that changing a disease gene in an embryo that then develops into a baby could have unintended consequences. There needs to be a solution that not only pleases the population by having the experiments being safe, but also helps scientists continue their research. There are few possible solutions about coming to a decision for what to do. One solution to this problem is allowing genetic engineering to be continued but with a few modifications to please both size. This should be because it is commonly known in the scientific world that in order to learn about something, one must experiment on it by observation and consistency. So in order to know more about genetic engineering and the effects of it, scientists must continue experimenting, and observing the effects of genetic engineering. However, as previously stated in the paper, people do not like when scientists uses a living organism as part of research. So a possible modification, is that scientists can wait until the organism is deceased then they can take the cells from them. That way it wouldn’t technically kill or harm the animal and they can still use its cells and DNA. These are the few modifications that could help support genetic
