Current technological innovations in the field of medicine have shed a positive light on society, by providing potential future benefits in different aspects of genetic engineering. This type of technology, which refers to the editing and screening of genes, has drastically increased in the last few decades. One example of this is editing embryos during development. In recent years, scientists have developed a piece of technology called CRISPR-Cas9. Specifically, it is used in editing human genomes for disorders and diseases, but in the near future, it could be utilized to change characteristics in babies like personality, eye color, and even intelligence. A group of authors, Claudia Kalb, Anne Underwood, and Jonathan Mummelo, constructed an article called “Peering Into the Future” that scrutinized the progressing genetic testing further, stating: “Testing is just one piece of the genomic revolution. A major goal is to create new sophisticated therapies at home in on a disease’s biological glitch, then fix the problem” (Kalb, Underwood, Mummelo 1). By providing readers with another example of advantageous possibilities for the future of genetic engineering, the statement influences them even further towards the positivity that could transpire from the current technology our society has. Again, the author mentioned the progressing impact it could have in the medical field, which adds the effect of emotion on readers, distinctively, that the lives of people that are sick can be vastly enhanced. They act as vectors for the diseases, carrying them from one organism to the next, including humans. A group of scientists, also using the CRISPR-Cas9, developed a way to engineer mosquitoes’ genes, so that there is a lower percentage of people that become infected with the deadly pathogens. In an article called “Engineering the control of mosquito-borne infectious diseases”, which was written by Paolo Gabrieli, in relation to these new discoveries and what could arise from them, stated: “From the generation of the first transgenic mosquitoes, to the creation of the first gene knock-outs, the discovery of genetic tools has revolutionized our ability to functionally study and edit the mosquito genome...providing unprecedented opportunities” (Gabrieli 1). This great improvement, considering how harmful and challenging battling diseases that are passed around by mosquitoes, is extraordinary.
