Genetic Engineering Persuasive Essay

Mary, a single mother of three was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a disease that can be traced through her genetic lineage, at the young age of thirty. With the help of genetic testing and genetic engineering, doctors might have been able to create a plan for Mary, allowing her to live to see her children graduate high school. People die every day from lack of health care, but even more die from genetic diseases that could be cured with the help of genetic engineering. Genetic engineering is essentially the modification of genetic material, and involves the use of DNA or DNA particles in order to create something new. It, “can be across different species or within a single species, and any genetic trait that is changed may be passed down to the progeny of the altered organisms” (Haugen 14). Genetic disorders kill people very day, and without research, people would not know the diseases that they might carry, “Testing is just one piece of the genomic revolution.” (Kalb 150). Before the engineering can even begin, testing must happen first. Research and testing would allow doctors to, “identify patients with a propensity for a particular disease and give them a chance to take measures to avoid getting sick.” (Biotechnology 16). Meaning that patients would know if they carry the gene for a certain disease and could take action against the disease before it caused permanent damage. Genetic research, much like Stem Cell Research, would allow patients to know what they, or even their children could be carrying, and would allow doctors a way to begin to create a cure or a drug, because of that, genetic research and experimentation can help save lives
