A genetic screening of a fetus can allow for illnesses to be detected in the unborn before it's too late. A benefit of human genetic engineering is that with gene therapy, a fetus with a detected genetic defect could be treated and even cured before it is born. Over time these changes can have a permanent impact by controlling the spread of diseases in future generations. Currently, many pregnant women elect to have their fetuses screened for genetic defects. The results of these screenings can allow the parents and their physician to prepare for the arrival of a child who may have special needs before, during, and after delivery. People today and in the past are limited by the physical and mental capacities that they were predestined with since birth. In this context, it is fair to say that genetic engineering will help level the social playing field. Genetic engineering has the potential to allow people a greater chance of fulfilling their dreams and pursuing their own happiness.
