Genetic engineering is an alluring and powerful branch of science and technology. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines genetic engineering as, “the group of applied techniques of genetics and biotechnology used to cut up and join together genetic material...from one or more species of organism and to introduce the result into an organism in order to change one or more of its characteristics”. Genetic engineering has led to some of the most remarkable advancements in agriculture and medicine.
One of the most popular, and controversial examples of genetic engineering is cloning. Cloning is the process of genetically replicating an organism ("Cloning: MedlinePlus"). However, most people aren’t aware that there are two forms of cloning. The majority of the population most familiar with the idea of reproductive cloning, and less familiar with therapeutic cloning.
Reproductive cloning is the form of cloning that involves creating a genetic copy of an organism. This form of cloning is most commonly used in agriculture. Reproductive cloning provides the ability to customize the genetic characteristics of crops and livestock. The genes of these plants and animals are altered in ways that make them healthier and more productive (“Genetic Engineering”).
One example of a genetic modification in agriculture is the injection of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST) into dairy-cows. The injection increases the amount of milk each cow produces by stimulating the mammary glands. Each cow…
