Genetic engineering, also called biotechnology, is a science in which genetic material is altered, transformed, and modified in various ways in order to manipulate certain characteristics of certain organisms or populations of organisms. Emerging in the 1970’s, this new technology is a study of genetics, heredity, and can be applied to plants, animals, and humans. Stated by Stephen P. Stich in Genetic Engineering: Opposing viewpoints: (p.74) “Genetic Engineering poses moral and social dilemmas every bit as daunting as the rewards are enticing.” Genetic Engineering involves the manipulation of certain genes in organisms to meet the desired expressed traits and qualities in any given offspring. It is the collection of techniques used to isolate genes, modify genes so that they work in a desired way, prepare genes to be inserted in to different species, and to develop transgenes. Genetic Engineering allows scientists to manipulate certain genes in certain organisms and insert them into other organisms so desired traits are expressed. Whether this is through human embryos or plant products grown for food, the science is nearly unlimited in the genome world. The process of creating these hybrid organisms is complex yet simple. The whole idea behind the science is to isolate a specific wanted gene and insert it into the wanted organism. Once the gene is isolated, it’s altered to fit certain requirements so it can function effectively and properly in the host organism.…
