Genetic Disorders: What´s Gene Therapy?

Gene Therapy What is gene therapy? Gene therapy is an experimental technique that uses genes to treat or prevent diseases or disorders. Using gene therapy you can replace the non-functioning genes with good functioning genes. Although gene therapy is safe there are however side effects afterword which makes it risky. Before we go into depth about gene therapy here is some basic knowledge. So to put it in a simple way all we are doing is replacing a bad gene with a good gene. A bad gene is in other words a defective gene. When a protein is missing or can't be made in a certain gene this can result with a disorder or disease. We use gene therapy to help the defective gene replace and or create the protein. It has some pros and cons to it. One pro of this is that it replaces …show more content…
However this is followed by a con. It increases the risk of other disorders to occurs. It is also possible to die from gene therapy. It is not likely unless something goes wrong when the inject it into you. This also can lead to lifelong effects. There are two different types of gene therapy. One of the most common one is Somatic Gene Therapy. There is also germline gene therapy. We will only talk about somatic gene therapy. So what exactly is somatic gene therapy? In somatic gene therapy you work with somatic genes(non-sex genes). Somatic gene therapy is where you inject a good working gene into a non-functioning gene to correct its disorder. This gene therapy is acceptable for different types of diseases or disorders. Some of which may include: cystic fibers, muscular dystrophy, cancer(etc.). This specific therapy can also be performed on life-threatening diseases.

One of the main reasons for the support of genetic disorders is the ability to cure genetic disorders. As mentioned above, there is no guarantee that the procedure has to work. In addition, if a modification is successful, this altered gene will later be passed onto future generations. Also, since these alterations are only prototypes, they can potentially cause mutations in future generations. Due to this potential danger, genetic editing cannot be depended upon short or long term.…

The idea of genes as drugs for human therapy was born in the United States in 1970s. The first application of gene therapy was used for treating patients with inherited monogenic disorders with recessive inheritance such as cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophies, lysosomal storage disorders, hemophilia, and many other conditions related with genetics (Giacca p.1). Gene therapy is done in two ways, one way is by isolating the patien’s cell followed by transferring genes in the lab called ex vivo gene therapy, or by direct delivery of therapeutic gene into the patients called in vivo gene therapy (Giacca…

Gattaca is about a guy, Vincent Freeman, who is born and they detect that disorders will occur in his 30 years of living. His younger brother, Anton Freeman, is given the “good” genes by a process called artificial selection. Artificial selection is a process done by man, where they close the mating process and the traits that go along with it are chosen.…

"Humans have long since possessed the tools for crafting a better world. Where love, compassion, altruism and justice have failed, Germline will not succeed" - Gina Maranto Germline Gene Therapy is when DNA is transferred into the cells that produce reproductive cells, eggs or sperm. This therapy allows for the correction of genetic disease, any manipulation to the germline would be transferred to future generations. Though Germline Gene Therapy has many benefits it's not ethical. Germline Gene Therapy involves the modification of germ cells (gametes) that will pass the change on to the next generation, with Germline Gene Therapy genes could be corrected using the egg or sperm being used to conceive, because every cells descends from the fertilized…

There are however many ethical issues revolving around this topic, such as who determines which genes are ‘good’ or ‘bad’? Will gene therapy make certain traits and characteristics undesirable and thus making us more un-accepting? If we can use gene therapy to change our genes, can we use it to change our phenotype or intellectual abilities? (http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/handbook/therapy/ethics) These are the types of questions many raise when talking about gene therapy and why it shouldn’t be used widespread. Medications which are also being trialled are those such as riluzole which aim to cure SMA…

As can be seen with Dolly the sheep and the drug Thalidomide, there can be many errors, and in some cases serious consequences. Simply put, people do not know enough about these technologies to be using them on humans. The consequences that these genetic changes might have on future generations is unknown. Is it safe to take these risks?…

Recombinant DNA are man made segments of DNA, which are increasingly becoming more advanced and used to manipulate genes. What the advancement of recombinant DNA allows scientists and doctors to do is associate certain genes to specific physical attributes, such as hair and eye color. However, when discussing genetics, there is a difference between genetic engineering and genetic selection.…

Imagine this; a world where no one has lifelong infections or medical conditions. This might be made possible soon; however, some are afraid that parents will take it too far. With enough money, they could transform their babies to be intelligent and good looking. The whole concept of gene modification is frightening, since genes are what make us and if that goes wrong everything could go wrong. Just like in live-action movies, if there is an advanced concept and that ends up in the wrong hands, the end result could be corrupt or disastrous. For example, in the movie “The Amazing Spiderman” a scientist turns himself into a human lizard, where he takes a reptile’s DNA and creates a drug to regrow his missing arm. Human gene therapy, seen from an evolutionary point of view, could be very surprising and unexpected since it is not the environment, such as selective pressure, that is contributing to evolution but is the organism itself. Depending on the perspective, gene therapy does not adhere to the rules of natural selection.…
