Genesis Conflict Analysis

Throughout the book of Genesis there exists many conflicts: Eve’s conflict with the serpent’s lies, the conflict of Cain and Abel, the conflict Moses has with the Egyptians to free the Israelites, and then the conflict Moses has with the children in the wilderness to follow God. These are just a few of the conflicts that are discussed in the book of Genesis. Joseph is a great example of how suffering and conflict, no matter how unfair, can develop great character and wisdom. The story of Joseph starts in Genesis chapter 37 and continues to 50. As his story begins, he is just a young lad, age 17, and is feeding the flock with his brothers. Joseph had many brothers but Joseph was the most favored of all of Jacob’s children. Joseph’s brothers didn’t care a lot for Joseph. He brought back “bad reports”. To compound the fact that he received favor in the eyes of their father, Joseph received a special tunic and then began to speak of having a dream in which their sheaves bowed down to his sheaf. He then had another dream that caused them to dislike him more because he pronounced that they all, including his father and mother, would bow to him. After two years, Pharaoh had two dreams which no one could interpret. The chief butler, a person who had a dream interpreted by joseph while in jail, mentioned Joseph’s ability. Joseph was presented before Pharaoh to interpret his dream. Joseph warned of the coming famine and suggested Pharaoh prepare for the coming years of famine. Pharaoh saw the advice as good and recognized that God was with Joseph. Pharaoh acknowledges Joseph’s wisdom and puts him above all of Egypt except the throne.
