Life may seem dark at times. Everyone can say at one point in their life they have hit rock bottom, when it feels like nothing is going the way it is supposed to. It can feel like there is no escape from all the negative things happening in someone’s life. Life is not about the undesirable, harmful, or destructive times in one’s life. Life is about how people respond to them. Is that a time someone should lay down and lose faith in God? In the book of Genesis the story of Joseph relates to type of suffrage seen in modern times, family betrayal. Faith is a very large topic in the book of Genesis and the story of Joseph; the Joseph story finds its most congenial context in the wisdom tradition of biblical literature and faith (Kort 1). This story is very clear about the importance of having faith in God. It may seem in modern families that the youngest child is usually the parent’s favorite. The literary form and genre of the book of Genesis is prose: biblical and historical narrative. Biblical narratives in Genesis show that “God is active in His world” and these narratives typically “chose certain events to reveal God.” For instance, this element is apparent when the Angel of the Lord speaks to Hagar, granting her the promise of descendants (Gen 16:10). In the same manner, this element is reinforced in subsequent chapters (Gen 17:19; 18:10). In describing this book, it is significant to note that most of the characters in the narrative are flawed.…

Harold Kushner, a Jewish Rabbi, wrote the book “When Bad Things Happen to Good People” after the tragic death of his son at a very young age. His son, Aaron, was diagnosed with an aging disease early in life and died at his fourteenth year. To find answers to his own tragic story, Kushner wrote the book which he also targeted to help individuals substantially hurt by life either by death or other tragedies and help them find answers to their crises of faith. Through his book, Kushner wished to help individuals find solace and withstanding faith to get through such troubling times. In life, we all go through trying times, and in such moments rather than faith making us stronger, it can make us weaker and thus question God as to why such situations…

As the son of Jacob’s prized wife Rachel, Joseph receives special treatment. The author of Genesis affirms this by stating “And Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons” (Gen 37:3). This is further proved when Joseph receives a colored tunic from his father while his brothers receive nothing. In addition to the tunic, Joseph also probably received the biggest allowance in the family, was given the easiest family chores to do (if any) and maybe even assigned to be “in charge” of the household when Jacob and Rachel were away.…

Since Job refused to renounce God, curbed his pride in presuming to understand God’s mystery, and in the end repented where he failed in this respect, his words remained in line with the will of God, who then blessed him with prosperity and happiness in the latter half of his life. This happy conclusion to an otherwise dismal story highlights the ways in which this story take the shape of an admonition to the Hebrew people. In essence, the story promises that if the students of this text follow the way of the Lord by staying faithful to him in word, never presuming to comprehend him, and always repenting of their wrongs and “[speaking] the thing of [God] that is right,” then they can expect a rich reward. In this way, the text reveals how important the way one spoke of God was in Hebrew society, and the condemnation that followed one who cursed God or proudly pretended to be wise in his ways. In the amphictyony that ruled Jewish culture, these judgments were important, and helped to provide further guidelines, in addition to the rest of the Old Testament, for living righteously in the eyes of God.…

Out of Job’s namesake book in the Old Testament comes a familiar story that is known for the grueling trials of one of God’s most devout servants. Job appears to be spared from no form of suffering; his children are slaughtered, his fortune dissipates, and his community ostracizes him. The man who earned his fame from pious actions and abiding by God’s word seems to have been paradoxically abandoned by his maker, initializing a deep agitation in Job’s previously secure philosophy. Although these forms of suffering are diverse, they are easily unified by an underlying theme integral to the human condition. These hardships each produce some form of isolation for Job, a rift between him and the rest of the world, which leads to his desolate condition.…

There are two key components of human nature expressed in the book of Genesis. Genesis 1-2 addresses the beginning, when man was created, and more specifically created in the image of God. This is essential, because it displays the “goodness” in not just all of Creation but God’s distinct love for human-kind as we were blessed to be made in his image, “In the first Creation narrative, Genesis 1, God celebrates what he has made and gives humankind a position of honor and responsibility,” (Shuster, 2013). This image includes the gift of rational thought, the capability to love, our spiritual attributes and our dominion over Creation. The Garden of Eden was a temple, a paradise of perfect harmony, encompassing the true and pure relationship that God desired to have with humans.…

Have you ever wonder, why there is so much suffering on the poor if there is a God who is on their side? The answer is faith. During the 20th century, Gustavo Gutiérrez started a movement called liberation theology in which he defines in his book A Theology of Liberation: History, Politics, and Salvation as, “The theology of liberation attempts to reflect on the experience and meaning of the faith based on the commitment to abolish injustice and to build a new society” (174).
