Differences between Generational Work Styles and Attitudes Work styles differ between each generation, mainly due to the many advances in the quality of life, especially that of technology. This can affect the view points between the older and younger generations. Deana Coan makes a statement that “One area where generational differences can be found is in the attitudes towards work” (Coan 17). Attitudes of employees are very important to how productive the workplace is. The different values of each generation can become a factor in how people get along as well as how they work as a team. You can say that there is one that is much more present between the Baby Boomer and their offspring, Generation X. That mainly due to the major advancements in technology and that of the emphasis on individuals that Gen Xers have. In Neil Simmons article he describes the characteristics of the three generations that make up most of the generations that are present in the workforce today. The Baby Boomers have a more “respect for institutional information” while Gen Xers instead feel more like that “information is an essential tool for enabling their work.” And that of the Gen Y’s having the attitude of “all institutional information should be instantly available.” (Simmons 31) The different attitudes that each generation has formed has led to a “gap” in the generations and how they treat their careers and jobs. That is mainly been caused by the bringing about of technology and how fast it has developed. Leaving behind generations like the WWII and the Baby Boomers as well as the older Gen Xers. A good way to get the older generations was to mix in the younger generations to help teach the older generation to the new technology, and for the older generations to mentor the younger and to teach them imitational knowledge, values and
