Three days after he heard her cousins had left he came back to town. The gossip around town was that maybe he left and was preparing for Miss Emily to come live with him. The town’s people had heard she was seen purchasing a toilet set with his initials and mans full outfit which would indicate a possible wedding. Homer was seen entering Emily’s one last time and then he was never seen or heard from again. After some time a stench began to rise from Emily’s home. The neighbors began to complain to the judge but there was nothing he could do. The older generation feels it would be disrespectful to tell Emily her house stinks so one evening some of the townsmen crept over to the house and broke down the seller door. They placed lime in the cellar door and around the home. Emily watched through a lighted window as they crept back across the lawn (Faulkner 301).
