Generation Spend By Erica Alini

Decent Essays
Erica Alini starts off the article strong and is able to narrow in on the problem at hand from the beginning of the article. Erica Alini’s article “Generation Spend” focuses on the financial irresponsibility of thousands of young people in this generation. Alini uses the term “serial shopper” as a descriptor for members of Generation Y(200). The main issues concerning Generation Y, according to Alini, is their ability to spend while being chronically unable to accumulate savings. She clearly supports this issue by referring to statistics associated with dates, different studies in relation to the topic and direct quotes from primary sources such as RBC bank parents and a few university students. The use of primary sources make the article more

Hunter and Worsley (2009) concluded that the retiring baby boomers even with a reduced income would not sacrifice spending on general well-being and would instead make cuts elsewhere. Baby boomers behold a reduced importance on convenience and therefore will spend more time on purchasing decisions (Worsley, Wang and Hunter, 2011). Mogilner (2009, p.220) backs up that ‘consumer’s expenditure of time carries a…

Have you ever wondered what social class do you fall into? Do you consider yourself as rich or as poor? These characters are trying their best to make a decent living. Everyone knows the saying “If you try your best you’ll succeed” we heard it all the time from our parents when we don’t think that we can do it. In “The Beat Up Generation” (2014), written by Abby Ellin, she defines the Millenials as a generation that is spoiled, self-entitled and technology controlled. Despite the negative representation of Millenials, Ellin praises them for being hardworking, technology innovating and outspoken. Ellin offends Generation Y being viewed as lazy and having no motivation to work in order to further claim her purpose and because this was written for Psychology Today and published, her intended audience was for the general public who were most likely to be curious or knowledgeable about the Millenials. I wasn’t very shocked or angry of what Ellin wrote about Millenials since it was all true. Sure, we do come across as lazy, technology obsessed or as we have been named as “heads down generation” meaning we always have our head down looking into our phones but that is because of our generation like many generations before us, is flawed.…

But just because you are showered with gifts still doesn’t mean that we are spoiled or that people are making us spoiled, when we give ideas or gifts to people, it’s just because we love them and we show that by the things we give them. This doesn’t mean that giving presents is a bad thing, it just means that a big present is too much, the next time a holiday comes up then they expect more than last time. Most of us are responsible enough to get jobs and take care of are self, knowing that we have a limited amount of money “I think that nowadays parents are a little lenient to the kids to where they don't have to say, get a job, pay the bills, they don't typically have to worry about anything.” (21, Friend Becky)…

The Life-Cycle Hypothesis (LCH) explains the saving and dissaving behavior of consumers via the life-cycle stages of a household. The LCH posits that spending and saving will vary as individuals attempt to hold their marginal utility of consumption constant as they transition through the various stages of the life cycle. The three stages of the life-cycle consist of young, middle-aged, and retired members of a household. As households venture through various stages over the life-cycle, each stage presents distinctive financial goals and challenges for consumers. The LCH also states that the total resources available for consumption over a lifetime is the sum of an individual’s net worth at the beginning of the period, plus the value of income…

In the scenario from “The Daily Dilemma” by Charis Denison, the character Jennifer wants to go to a party, but she’s worried about the risks that come with lying to her parents about some of the details of the party. She believes that this party will help her feel more comfortable at her new school, but she knows that if she is caught lying to her parents she would no longer have their trust causing her to be in a dilemma. I believe the best response to this situation is to go to the party and to not discuss about the parents not being home during the party. Considering that Jennifer knows that her parents would not let her go to a party if the parents are not home, she should not tell her parents that the parents are going to be gone. This will allow Jennifer to go to the party which will help her go to the party and make new friends, however she runs the risk of getting caught lying to her parents.…
