I believe that I would be a good candidate for the Grayling Generating Station Limited Partnership Scholarship. Through the following paragraphs I hope to demonstrate my suitability as a recipient of this scholarship. “It’s not where you start it’s where you finish” is a famous song lyric that applies to my life story. I believe my journey began in a small, rural, impoverished village in southern China, named Dapu. At the age of ten months I was adopted by my mom and traveled 7622 miles to arrive in Grayling, MI.…
At the age of 21, having her first daughter, my mother did not have an education beyond the sixth grade. Three years later we were abandoned by my fleeing father to fend for ourselves in a small and rural community. Growing up on the small Caribbean island of St. Lucia, my mother struggled for many years to support her small family. Four years ago, we made our way to Florida, along with my younger sister, where we resided with friends. Although I graduated high school in St. Lucia, my mother did not have the finances to aid with my college expenses, thus she insisted that I again attend high school to provide her with ample time to obtain some form of income.…
In my family there are six kids, and I am the oldest. The youngest sibling is my half-brother, Isaac. Who rarely stays the night (two weekends a month). Our family is into sports and we travel often. Having money for food on away trips is tough at times.…
My father moved from Haiti to the United States in order for me and my other siblings to have better opportunities and access to resources. He brings me to the United at the age of twelve years old. I had the chance to attend middle school and high school. As their second oldest, I will be the first in our family to attend college. My older brother didn't have the chance to do so because my dad income was very low since he didn't speak English.…
Having received the LAEF scholarship for the past 3 years has been a blessing for me and my family. The LAEF Scholarship means the world to me because it’s a constant reminder and symbol that there are good people in this world that care about my education and the education of others as well. Knowing that the LAEF foundation cares about my education as much as my parents do makes me want to excel in and out of school. I can say that the LAEF scholarship has impacted my educational experience because it has given me motivation, determination, and has also given me a chance to set a goal for myself. The LAEF scholarship pushes me and gives me the extra support I need to do well in all my classes since I am determined to get a 4.0 GPA.…
Receiving this scholarship would help me in more ways than one. This scholarship would help my family and I pay for the expenses of my books and my tuition, this way I would not be stressed during my studies of how I will be able to pay for all of my schooling. Any form of money that I can receive will be significantly beneficial. Being a recipient I would use this money to put towards my degree in Occupational Therapy, where I will be helping kids with disabilities learn the basic day to day living skills. After graduation, I will be attending East Central College to get my general courses out of the way, while taking classes that will help me in my future career.…
Again, I faced similar issues to Mary Crow Dog regarding my family. My mother and grandmother worked…
My parents crossed the border from Mexico to come to this country for a better life. I They do not have a high level of education, they did not even graduate high school. Therefore my father does not have a well paid job and he is always worrying about bills. My father used to be self employed distributing product.…
My parents make an average amount of money, but over the past year, the cost of college became a reality to me and my family. Each semester the total cost for my schooling is $8,284.00, since I am currently receiving help from the U.S. Military, they pay for roughly $3,599.00 of my schooling cost, and I thank them so much for their help, but my parents are left with a total of $4,487.00 to pay on their own and it has become a strain on them. I have a younger sister who is in high school who loves playing sports and recently she has come up with the idea of trying to join a volleyball league, which means more money. Due to my parents paying for my schooling I feel like I am restricting my sister from her dream because she is only allowed her…
Ever since I was a young girl, I’ve had a complicated life because of the background behind who I am. I would always look at my mom and question myself on why it was so hard for her to find a job? Why was it that we didn’t have our own home? How come I moved so far away from where I was born? Where was my dad?…
I am writing to express my gratitude for your altruism, and your decision to choose me to be the recipient of your LGBTQA scholarship. On August 22, 2016, I will be a freshman at McHenry County College, and I will be taking 14 credit hours as I work for my Associate’s in Art’s degree and graduate by May 2018. I plan to transfer to Northern Illinois University so I can major in psychology and minor in English to prepare for my career as both a forensic psychologist and an author. Since 2008, me and my family have struggled financially; we have lived off of an income where even twenty-dollars can be difficult to come up with.…
Personal Goals I aspire to attend a university and pursue a higher level of education. My parents did not attend college or even finish high school. I want to be the first in my family to pursue a college degree. I started my journey on the first day of high school. I recognized that I had put my academics before anything in order to have a promising future.…
When I first learned of this assignment my first thought was to interview my mom. She is the one person in my life I am closest to. Since we are only twenty three years apart, I thought it would be best to focus on her life up to the point where she decided to have kids. Though I knew most of what she told me it was still nice to just sit and talk about her life experiences. My mother was born to older parents and was the youngest of three children.…
I moved from Indonesia to America approximately ten years ago. My mother’s motive to bring my older brother and I to America was to attained a higher quality of education aiming for prosperity and life of ease. It was definitely a struggle because we didn’t come from a wealthy family, along with my mom being a single mother combined, it results in a financial barrier to achieve the expected goal. Additional to that, our family were denied when we applied for citizenship, but were granted with Withholding of Removal instead. We are able to live and work in America legally, but unable to receive the benefits of citizens.…
My father is a bit of the opposite. His job is not as important as we are to him. My dad grew up with an alcoholic father who never paid mind to his children, so it was his decision to never be like his father. He does everything for us. He always goes to our school celebrations, no matter how big or small.…
