In the United States, a common mental health problem is known as a general anxiety disorder – which classifies as a mood disorder. Anxiety disorder involves a combination of biological and psychological processes in response to the stimulus in the environment. When anxiety begins to interfere with your regular day to day activities, making it impossible to function normally then it becomes a disorder. Anxiety is clinically confirmed as a diagnosis know as – Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). In order for someone to be diagnosed with GAD, they must experience symptoms that are consistent and last for a period of more than six months. Individuals who suffer from an anxiety disorder are in a constant state of worry and fear, and perceive the …show more content…
Also, before confirming the GAD diagnosis, conditions such as cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, myasthenia gravis, and alcohol and substance abuse must be ruled out first. There are many different causes of anxiety and is highly personalized among individuals on differences in the nature of symptom formation that varies among each individual. The exact causes of anxiety and its prevalence is not identified since it’s either left undiagnosed or left not treated. Not all patients require treatment for anxiety, however sever cases are recommended treatment which usually consists of multiple kinds of therapies. Individuals who often are not aware that they have an anxiety disorder often activate defensive mechanisms such as repression, displacement, rationalization etc.; that help them cope with the negative effects that they experiencing. Individuals suffering from physical symptoms of anxiety experience weakness, dizziness, sweating, nausea and high blood pressure, problems breathing with tightness in their chest, shoulders, neck or hands.
