After reading Owen’s case the generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) stands out. GAD is a serious and common disorder (Bandelow et al., 2013). Symptoms of this disorder include: constant restlessness, irritation, edginess, or a feeling of being without control; fatigue, lethargy, or generally low energy levels (feeling drained); tense muscles, especially on the back, neck, and shoulders; trouble concentrating or focusing on tasks or activities; and obsessing over negative and anxiety causing thoughts or disaster thinking (Bandelow et al., 2013). Owen states he has muscle tension, edgy feeling, lack of concentration, he is always preparing for a disaster, and is buying extra life insurance, disability insurance, and a retirement plan. Although causes of GAD and other anxiety disorders are not well known, some causes may include traumatic experiences in life, genetic influences, faulty conditioning, and neurobiological dysfunction (Bandelow et al., 2013). As listed in the DSM-5, other OCD related disorders include body dysmorphic disorder (anxiety with how the person appears to society), hoarding disorder (excessive collection of things), Trichotillomania (pulling hair to deal with anxiety), and Excoriation (picking skin to deal with anxiety).
