I have learned that I can never assume things about a person or situation. I also learned that I should do research on my clients background and try to gain understanding about what goes on in their lives and why they react the way they do. One major mistake the social worker made was over stepping her professional boundaries. This in particular showed me that I have to be always mindful of agency policy, and not get too attached to a client. Faith Harper’s story gave great insight into social work practice, and I will attempt to go above and beyond to help all women in Faith’s…
Response to the Video Social Worker-Career Conversation In the video “Social Worker-Career Conversation,” we are able hear from Tim Gienger who is an Advanced Clinical Specialist (ACS) in Bismarck North Dakota that works fulltime at West Central Human Services Center and part time at Lutheran Social Services and Minot State University as counselor. Throughout the video Mr. Gienger was asked several questions about his role, the target population he encounters, unique aspects of his setting, challenges he faces, and what he considers a successful outcome. In order to become an ACS, Mr. Gienger explains that a student should obtain both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work.…
Because of this, social justice is achieved through the servitude of people deemed as vulnerable, and oppressed, along with living in poverty (Jacobson, 2001). We also understand its pivotal role in the service it delivers to those in need by a way of the social policy arena devising and advocating to address the wide range of social problems in order to bring about change (Jacobson, 2001). Ironically, social policy efforts that are recent is aimed at the establishment or the protection of social workers roles, verses promoting transformations in the delivery of human services (Jacobson, 2001). It is also suggest more often in today’s society, social work students are more readily trained as clinical practitioners than advocates of change (Jacobson, 2001). Although there is a continuation of promoting social justice and action, strategies of this type is no longer prioritized (Jacobson, 2001).…
Well done Anees, I have seen an improvement in your writing style from marking your first assignment, this demonstrates your commitment and ability to recognise and act on your own learning needs to further develop your knowledge and skills for social work. This portfolio demonstrates you are now beginning to make links between theory and practice, having an awareness and an understanding of social work theories and how they can be applied in practice. This is particularly evident within your SWLC and communication assignments, where you demonstrated your knowledge of theories of communication and attachment and applied them to case examples from your practice. I can see you are developing your awareness of legislation and social policy related…
Connection to Service-Learning experience, the effectiveness of observed general social work practices, literature review of generalist practice, and knowledge, values and skills have all played a role in helping me realize why and how important it is to be a social worker that is aware and prepared for professional practice. Generalist practice in social work should continue to involve striving to give families, groups, communities, organizations, and individuals their best assistance. Along with continuing the use of the client’s strengths to support their…
I feel like I am professionally ready for my senior year placement. I am looking forward to being able to spend much more time and actually see what a social worker does and interact with a social worker on a much different level than previous service learning’s. I believe that being able to interact with individuals at this last site will help me tremendously when it comes to interacting with clients and employees at my senior placement. This service learning helped me to acquire social skills, which will be extremely helpful when it comes to next year. I would like to build on my learning for the next academic year by understanding and reading more about interviewing, assessment, intervention, and evaluation of practice.…
The process of gaining an education that will provide me with the tools that I will need in order to become a clinical social worker is already underway. I am currently faced with the challenge of combining my own personal life experiences together with the knowledge that I am acquiring so that I can position myself to be of service to others. Ideally, I would like to serve a population that is challenged with more than simply financial hardships. The beauty of feeling aligned with the energies that propel me to serve others, as they carve their paths toward a healthier, more prosperous future, lies in my awareness of the full-circle wholesomeness of it all.…
Generalist Practice The social work profession grows out of a liberal arts base. Its foundation is built on five elements. From this foundation, entry-level social workers assume a holistic generalist perspective about practice. From this perspective, the General Method of social work practice employs a systematically organized body of knowledge and skills that guides that generalist practitioner and the client system receiving service towards goal attainment.…
#1 A. Social work is a value based practice and employs a two pronged approach. The juggling act, as it were, in social work is a 100 year old debate exploring if the goal of social work is that of seeking social reform or focusing on treating the individual. (Haynes, 1998) All the while seeking to do what is “good and desirable” (Bisman, C., 2004)…
During this process, both students accepted the viewpoints, forms, and thinking of the social worker discourse community. Moreover, Davis’s research shows that both students began to see a new socially accepting standpoint a necessity for students who want to help members of economic and socially oppressed groups improve their situations. In fact, both students acknowledge trying to change the world around them, ultimately deciding to adapt to join the discourse community of social work, though it was harder for Stella because of her mindset. In the process of coming to college, the two students were agreeable to making a complete transition to write, solve problems, and adopt a social worker perspective, no matter how alien it was to their native communities, the students found themselves becoming someone…
The master of social work degree at Renison University College will help to enhance my social work competencies and develop specialized training in the health and social care field. This degree will allow me to advance my practice skills in critical thinking and social justice. The main learning goals that I hope to achieve include developing a deeper understanding for additions and therapeutic strategies such as a harm reduction approach. Furthermore, I would like to learn how social workers can influence the health care system internally without fear of job security and advocate for transitional services. Along with the practical learning, my goal is to develop self-awareness and enhance my critical thinking skills.…
Podcasts are a fantastic way to stay current with what's going on in your field. Many people might not be aware that there are podcasts for every interest including social work. Podcasts allow social workers to continue growing, and they introduce new ideas while they're on-the-go. You can listen to podcasts on the way to work, on the way to meet clients or during downtime at night. Social workers are often the bad guy in many situations, so it's great when podcasts can create a sense of inclusion and community with other social workers.…
As I have learned throughout my time as a social work student at Carleton University, I have become familiar with the generalist perspective of social work practice. My understanding of the general perspective stipulates, that it is better for a social worker to have a strong understanding of multiple theories and ways of practice, rather than being proficient in solely one theory or practice. This is directly related to the changes that have occurred at my placement, I have luckily been able to learn from two supervisors. Therefore, I was able to develop 2 distinct practices, which were influenced by my first supervisor Hadiya, and my second supervisor Caitlin. Both of the practices that I have learned were developed by watching how both of my supervisors respond to different experiences, as well as their interaction patterns with the residents of Harmony House.…
Self-Help Assignment Reflection Paper Meeting Information The experiences that I attained from attending two dissimilar self-help meetings were beneficial and applicable to my role as a future social worker. It is imperative to have a strong sense of self and engage in opportunities that encourage personal reflection especially when working in the helping profession. This occasion allowed me to explore my thoughts and feelings and reflect on the impact that these meetings had on me personally and professionally.…
During this assignment, I will be using Gibbs reflective model to describe service users and carer's perspectives. Then reflecting back on the information/experience I have gathered and applying it to how it has contributed positively to social work practice. I'll be gradually moving onto the skills that are required to work effectively alongside service users and carers for a positive outcome. Ending with me demonstrating a positive value base for working with service users and carers throughout my assignment.…
