Throughout this journal, Zaroff can be characterized as cold hearted and mysterious. First off, Zaroff is mysterious because he lives on a mysterious island in the middle of no where. As Rainsford states “OFF THERE to the right--somewhere--is a large island, said Whitney. It's rather a mystery” This quote states that the island is mysterious. Also Rainsford states “We were drawing near the island then. What I felt was a--a mental chill; a sort of sudden dread." (Conell). This explains how the island is creepy and sketchy. Secondly, Zaroff is mysterious because he knows more about Rainsford then Rainsford knows about him. In the quote “I've read your book about hunting snow leopards in Tibet, you see, explained the man. I am General Zaroff.” …show more content…

Through this quote one can infer that Zaroff is suggesting that he is hunting humans but at first he never comes out and says it. Zaroff is also extremely cold hearted. First of all, Zaroff is cold hearted. Zaroff says “Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and, if needs be, taken by the strong. The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure. I am strong.” (Conell) this quote infers that Zaroff does not care about ones life and does not mind taking one. Further more, Zaroff does not care about his friends and/or acquaintance. “You've done well, Rainsford, the voice of the general called. Your Burmese tiger pit has claimed one of my best dogs. Again you score.” (Connel) In this quote Zaroff tells Rainsford that he had killed one of his best dogs without even batting an eye. Thirdly Rainsford thinks he is soupier to most people. Zaroff states “Ivan is an incredibly strong fellow, remarked the general, but he has the misfortune to be deaf and dumb. A simple fellow, but, I'm afraid, like all his race, a bit of a savage.” This quote tells the reader that he is an arrogant and

Another quote that is similar to the first one is detected on page 25 line 570, it implies, “ ...Will supply you with hunting clothes, food, a knife…”. (General Zaroff talking to Rainsford) This is saying that the only thing that could protect Rainsford is that knife while the general has a gun. Even though the general's gun has a short caliber and ranges it would still be considered cheating because a gun can cause more damage than a knife. When Rainsford meets Zaroff, he is charmed by him because of his “...military mustache,...high cheekbones, ...sharp-cut nose, ...spare, dark face, the face of a man used to giving orders, the face of an aristocrat”, and he later is admirable of Zaroff because of how he provides him with “...an evening suit… [that comes from] a London tailor who ordinarily [cuts] and [sews] for none below the rank of duke” (Connell 9). Rainsford also commends many of the rooms in Zaroff’s house because of their fancy aspects, including the “...large, beam-ceiling bedroom” and the dining room with its “...oaken panels, its high ceiling, its vast refectory tables where twoscore men could sit down to eat...mounted heads of many animals—lions, tigers, elephants, moose, bears”, and he finds them “remarkable” (Connell 9-10). Rainsford is in awe of all of Zaroff’s possessions and wealth that he has acquired from his military accomplishments. He does not stop to think about the kind of person that Zaroff could be behind of all of those…

I dissagree with Hemingway's statement that defines courage as "Grace under pressure" In the story "The Leap" It says "My mother onces said that I'd be amazed at how many things a person could do during the act of falling"( ). With this quote, being courageous would to be able to fall on your own, but to be grace under pressure you would think a lot while falling. Also in The Leap It says "I was not suprised to see her, she was smiling, she was so matter-of-fact, she tapped on the window, I remember how she did it too, it was the friendliest tap." ( ). In this quote to be courageous you would go save your daughter but to be grace under pressure you would be calm while saving her.…
