On page 21 line 452-453, it exclaims, “I am to follow, armed only with a pistol of the smallest caliber and range.” (General Zaroff) After a thorough understanding of the quote, I conclude that General Zaroff is a deceiver. The reason I say that is because he has more advantage in killing a person from a distance than the person that is running away from him. General Zaroff knows the island like the back of his hand; he knows where the Death Swamp is located and he knows where he's going. Another quote that is similar to the first one is detected on page 25 line 570, it implies, “ ...Will supply you with hunting clothes, food, a knife…”. (General Zaroff talking to Rainsford) This is saying that the only thing that could protect Rainsford is that knife while the general has a gun. Even though the general's gun has a short caliber and ranges it would still be considered cheating because a gun can cause more damage than a knife. The general also had hounds if he couldn't find his “prey” within 2 days or so. Zaroff says he never loses because he's having dogs track the person down, have a gun to shoot them with, and he knows the island very well. Nevertheless, In my opinion, he should make the game fair by having the same amount of resources he is giving the “prey” and the same thing
