General Survival Tactics / Philosophy
Uncle Tom Says:
As a point of survival philosophy, given an extended / severe survival situation, there are generally only three possible outcomes:
People become predators
People become prey
People become pioneers
Predators are lone wolves or pack scum that have determined that their survival means taking what others have. They have little to no regard for human life and will do whatever it takes to survive for another day or to ensure that their family survives for another day.
Prey are usually well meaning / unassuming people, who may or may not have had the foresight to work up a plan. They generally won’t survive. Their lack of vigilance can make them easy targets of opportunity for Predators.

(Intro) Peter Singer’s “Famine, Affluence, and Morality” and Garrett Hardin’s “Lifeboat ethics” are contradictory philosophical works that examine whether scarce resources should be shared with the poor. Singer’s argument is that “suffering and death from lack of food, shelter and medical care are bad" (Singer, 1972); therefore all people become morally obligated to help the poor. While Hardin argues that ethics of a Lifeboat should be followed because there is a finite amount of resources available at our disposal (Hardin, 1974, pp.566). Both authors take extreme positions by providing opposing arguments on whether we should be involved in helping the famine or not. This essay will analyze the rational of both authors’ while trying…

Thousands of lives are lost to reckless decision making, yet incidents keep occurring at higher rates every year. The word survival connotes a life versus death issue, but when considering situations of survival a person must remember “We each survive in our own way” (Maas 21). According to Google, the definition of survival is “the state or fact of continuing to live or exist, typically in spite of an accident, ordeal, or difficult circumstances,” which opens up the interpretation to extend beyond living and include emotional, mental or social survival (1). While some people argue that a person in a situation of survival should be held accountable for their actions, it is unethical to not take into consideration the circumstances of an incident. A person seeking simplicity can argue that one person killing another is as simple as black and white, and…
