There are many personality traits that help a student become well suited to be a general surgeon. Communication skills need to be excellent since an important part of their daily job will be to interact with the patients in order to chose what procedures would be best suited for their needs. Surgeons need to have compassion considering that they work with people who can be sick, injured, or in pain and must show an understanding in the interest of making the patient feel better. Surgeons also need to be detail oriented in order to know that their patients are receiving adequate treatment and medication. This also comes into play when they are recording medical information, ensuring that mistakes are not to be made. Dexterity is very significant
