Method The study done used the dataset from the General Social Survey (2014). It has been brought forth by the University of Chicago. The GSS monitors societal change and studying the different variations of American society. The survey aims to gather data on American society so that they can monitor and explain the different trends and constants in the attitudes, behaviors, and attributes in the nation’s culture. Some other things that they look at is the structure and functioning of society and the role that is played by different relevant subgroups. Something else that they do is to compare the society in the United States and other societies.

The dataset also focuses on demographic and socio-economic variables. Some of the variables that are covered includes crime, family, mental health, high risk behaviors, racial identity, and the environment. For the whole dataset, the total sample size was 2,538 people. The number of males 1,141 while the number of females was 1,397. This meant that 45% were males and 55% were females. When it comes to our particular part of the research, we had 1,244 participants in total.
We selected two raw variables for our research. The two variables include depression and years of service in the United States military. The dependent variable in this circumstance is depression and the independent variable is the number of years in the military. Our dependent variable is coded as two categories. The first category is ‘yes’ and the second one is ‘no’. Pertaining to the independent variable, it is categorized in five categories. These categories included: ‘NONE,’ ‘LESS THAN 2 YRS,’ 2 TO 4 YEARS,’ ‘MORE THAN 4 YRS,’ and ‘SOME, DK HOW
