1. General Oil and Gas Safety
The above depicted oil rig disasters and subsequent inquires have shown that most of the incidents were due to health and safety violations, lack of proper safety procedures, safety management and implementation of safety regime. When compared with the off shore rig safety standards in the North Sea rigs, the Canadian safety standards lagging behind due to this the Canadian Federal Government amended the existing laws and introduced the Atlantic Occupational Health and Safety Initiative on the 31st of December 2014, creating a new occupational health and safety regime. These amendments to the legislature was done giving prominence to the health & safety of personal, equipment and facilities to safe guard the offshore oil and gas industry in Canada.
The general frame work and legislation to prevent accidents and injury resulting, related to, or occurring during the course of employment in offshore petroleum related activities is set by the Government of Canada and Provincial governments of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador and the offshore regulators namely Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board and Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board.
