2. Facts:
a. General H. Norman Schwarzkopf was born August 22, 1934 and one of his most notable achievements was the design and overall execution of Operation Desert Storm. Even from childhood Schwarzkopf intended to join the military and follow in his father's footsteps. Schwarzkopf began his military career at the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. After he graduated Schwarzkopf went to FT. Benning for training before being assigned to his first unit in the 187 Airborne Infantry Regiment at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

As Schwarzkopf’s career began to kick off he held positions in multiple administrative roles in Washington D.C. and also commanded Infantry divisions across the U.S. and Germany. By 1988 he became a four star general and was appointed Commander in Chief of the U.S. Army Central Command. At this time Schwarzkopf had to come up with a plan in order to combat the Iraqi invasion of the Persian Gulf. Lopez writes, “It was a plan that helped the U.S. led coalition forces to defeat Iraqi forces just 210 days after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. Operation Desert Storm lasted only 42 days… the ground portion only lasting 100 hours, endings with a cease-fire, an end to the war, and the liberation of Kuwait” (Lopez, 2012). One of the reasons why this operation was so successful was because of Schwarzkopf's “left hook” strategy, which is described as a flanking maneuver.
