A Lesson in General Musky Fishing
My Experience and Knowledge Concerning Musky Fishing
“There you go Austin, reel it in!” my dad said. We were fishing for walleye off a dock at Clear Lake, Iowa. I was only 9 years old. I knew that whatever I had on the line was big, but I had no idea that it would be the first musky I'd ever seen or caught. The fish was mediocre size, having a length of only 31 inches. Nonetheless, I was mesmerized by the musky’s beauty and grace as it swam away from the dock.
I was so enthralled with musky that for the next couple years, every time I went out fishing with my father, I would tirelessly cast again and again looking for an elusive musky. I eventually and unavoidably became bored with musky fishing when I hadn't caught one after I'd been fishing for them for close to three years.
Then, suddenly last summer, while my dad

I realized this was a perfect opportunity to enlighten myself about the best information I could find about muskies and musky fishing. So, with this in mind, I began to compile some questions that I thought needed to be answered.
First of all, where is the best time and place to catch musky? What is a body of water with a natural abundance of muskies? What environment do these elusive fish thrive in? What weather do they like? What kind of food do they eat? What's the best lure to catch them? What's the best rod and reel to get one to the boat? What's the best technique of musky fishing? How big do musky lures get? Also, what makes Muskies so elusive?
I combined all of the points of my questions into what I believed to be a broad yet specific research question: What's the best technique, equipment, weather, and environment to catch big musky in? After my research, I found a complete answer to my question.

Up in the North woods, where the wolves howl and the bucks run wild, there lives a man who devotes his life to living off the land. This man, Jerry Saum, a crude and renegade type character, has lived in Saum, Minnesota for his whole life. Saum, MN lies 45 miles directly North of Bemidji, and two miles East of the Red Lake Indian Reservation. I have known Jerry Saum for five years, due to my deer hunting shack that sits four miles South of Saum. In my early years deer hunting up North, Jerry would frequently come down to the cabin, always wearing a Busch Light sweatshirt or the local Saum Fire Department crewneck.…

For some, fishing isn't just a hobby, its a way to survive. Not only are panfish the most targeted species, perch, crappie, and bluegill provide an excellent source of healthy food, and fun for all anglers. Despite previous surveys showing the current possession limits are okay, I think Minnesota should raise the panfish limit because some people rely on fish as a main source of food and income.…

It was fairly slow going after that, with some sort of large fish following my fly or spinner in on each cast but never committing (I'd later find out they were Striped Bass). Finally, something bit and while it didn't fight too well I was excited, it was my very first walleye (very amusing considering I grew up on Lake Huron-currently a walleye hotspot). Lake Powell has no limits on either Walleye or Striped Bass due to their predatory effect on bait fish and their rapid proliferation, so I bonked this one on the head and proceeded to less-than-expertly fillet it. Trout and walleye for dinner!…

If you want the best results you’re going to get then you cannot have a low budget. The best result comes from high quality rods such as G-Loomis, Reflection Rods, All-Star Rods, or even Ugly Stick Rods. Also, for best results a very nice real such as Abu-Garcia, Lew’s, Shimano reels, and many more. Those may be a little hard to find sometimes so look for a rod that isn’t going to break when there is a fish on the line. Apart from the rod or reel freshwater anglers tend to use artificial baits like plastic worms, spinnerbaits, top-water plugs, and even spoons which isn’t really a spoon just has the same silver color as a spoon.…
