General Electric –The reason GE’s success in implementing six sigma was it customized it to fulfill specific needs and characteristics of its business. In particular, DMADV (define, measure, analyze, design, and verify) approach designed by GE Medical System attempted to include process management and process redesign in six sigma, while moving beyond DMAIC (often regarded as a synonym of six sigma),which was originally developed for high quality product developments. GE Capital’s DABTL (define, architect, build, test, launch) is a six sigma methodology designed for systems development.

DuPont – SBT’s research found out that, DuPont combined six sigma principles with the
SCOR (Supply Chain Operations Reference) model, which enabled effective communication among SCM partners. SCOR includes five core management processes, - plan, source, make, deliver, and return. DuPont’s Six Sigma approach utilizes a quality function deployment (QFD) tool for converting customers’ requirements to products, processes or services.

The first step is to identify key issues and problems through the voice of the customer (VOC) and the voice of the business (VOB) as well as the analysis of SCM related processes. This step delineates customer’s critical to quality (CTQ) criteria. The next step is to find out the CTQ-dependent variable (Y). The define phase provides inputs for the next phases.

Measure Phase

The current level of CTQ-Y is first identified in the measure phase and a new target level is set up. The next step is then to identify the key explanatory variables (Xs). This step verifies CTQ-Y and then, if necessary, identifies other variables that can substitute CTQ-Y. The following step elicits potential Xs (or causes of the problem) with respect to five design parameters:
