Imagine you are sitting in a math class and you are taking notes on logarithmic equations and every time you hear the teacher say something new a student will shout out “Will this be on the test?” Common Core Standards have been affecting students since 2001 when the No Child Left Behind Act was put in place. While some people think common core standards are a great way to keep schools on the same track, I maintain that common core standards are just a way to stress children out with over testing. Common Core Standards are a set of standards set by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers and Department of Education to keep schools across the country on track with other schools and to prepare students…

I felt discouraged coming into the class at the beginning, but my writing improved tremendously after being in the class. The class was beneficial to me in several ways.…

Probably the two biggest things I’ve learned from taking English 1010 is summarization and citation. At the beginning of the class, I struggled with not trying to make my summaries sound like lists. As I kept practicing, I learned how to reflect my writing style and voice into my summaries, while still being able to effectively get the point of the original source across. I learned how to add citations to my writing when quoting or paraphrasing a source, something of which I did very little in my writing before I took the class. English 1010 is also the first class where I have written a full length literature review concerning a discussion around a certain topic.…

Based on my prior experience in honors english for two years, AP English Language and Composition, and AP Literature, English 101 honors is the best fit for my experience and my level of meticulous and strategic writing at this point. Writing and reading have always come easy to me in school; whether reading to write a book review for the class or reading for the AP exam, I have excelled with high honors and the highest remarks from the faculty on my writing and style. English has always been one of my best subjects. Most of my english teachers were pretty impressed with my writing skills and with my advanced vocabulary for my age. My 9th grade english teacher even thought that I should get into writing, whether as a blogger or as an journalist.…

English composition was never my strong nor favorite because of my knowledge of the grammar and organization in my writing. Taking English 101 is a jump start for me, because last year of high school my teacher focused primarily on English literature. The course has introduced me to rhetorical analysis, and swatching (imitating author argument). Throughout the semester and all of the papers written I can say that it was a good experience to write at a college level and the expectation from college professors is good for future courses that involve writing essays.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

English 219 was my first college level English course, and through attending and completing all of the assignments I have learned many skills that I believe will greatly help me in my future courses in college. Next semester I am enrolled in English 220, and after having taken this course I feel substantially better about continuing on with English courses at a college level. It has helped me to become more confident in my writing skills and provided me with an excellent basis for me to continue on with next semester, and throughout the rest of my schooling experience. English 106 was the first real college class that I ever stepped foot in, and because of that, I was extremely nervous and unsure. The English teachers at my high school always said that the papers they assigned were held to college standards, and I always did well on those assignments, but I was still unsure about this course. I expected this course to be loaded with reading and writing assignments that would make me pull all-nighters on a regular basis. After going through English 106, I realized that there were not too many assignments and that I learned a lot from each one. To me, the most salient parts of this course were the discourse community paper, the annotated bibliography, the art analysis, peer reviews, revisions, and reflections.…

You are in class one day when the teacher announces a new assignment: students are to research and give an informative speech about any topic of their choosing. As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…
