The story of Rahab is found in the Book of Joshua, chapters 2 and 6. Rahab was a gentile woman and a prostitute living in Jericho, which was the city destined to be destroyed by God so that the Israelites could have the land. Rahab was not Jewish, but she had heard the stories of how God was saving the Israelites and leading them to The Promised Land. Rahab had not personally seen the miracles God was working to save the Israelites, but she believed the stories and that God was truly saving them. Rahab helped Israelite spies who went to Jericho before the city was to be destroyed. She did this by hiding them in her home so that the soldiers who were looking to capture them could not find them and she lied to the soldiers so that they would go look for the spies in another direction. Rahab’s actions helped the Israelites so that they could conquer Jericho and lead them closer to The Promised Land. Although Rahab was a gentile, she had faith in God and risked her life to help the Israelites and God rewarded her actions by protecting her and her family when He destroyed Jericho. Rahab was a prostitute and a sinner, but her actions and sacrifice helped God fulfill his covenant with the Israelites to lead them to The Promised Land. Ruth was a Moabite woman who came from the people of Lot. Ruth was a virtuous woman, but the people from Moab were the result of incest between Lot and his daughters. The story of Ruth is found in the Book of Ruth. She married an Israelite even though she was from Moab and when her husband died, Ruth pledged her loyalty to her mother-in-law Naomi. Ruth also declared her commitment to Naomi by stating she would never leave her and that she would have faith in the God of Naomi’s people. Ruth said, “Wherever you go I will go, wherever you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people and your God, my God” (Ruth 1:16). Ruth followed God’s law by professing her faith in God and showing her loyalty and commitment to Naomi. Even though Ruth was a Moabite and came from sinful people, she was a virtuous woman and a role model for what people should do to show their faith in God and how people should love and care for one another.
