There is a lot of controversy over whether gene therapy should be used. Some people want gene therapy to be used and others do not want gene therapy to be used. Some say that Gene therapy can be helpful and save lives but others say that is it right to play the hand of god and change people’s genes.
The Idea of Gene therapy was first proposed in the beginning of the nineteen seventies. When the idea was first proposed they did not call it Gene Therapy instead it was called gene surgery. In nineteen eighty four a system was developed that could successfully insert a gene into a chromosome of a mammal. September Fourteenth nineteen ninty was the date that the first gene therapy was approved in the …show more content…
So with gene therapy a carrier is inserted into a cell. This carrier is called a vector. A lot of times a virus is genetically engineered to be the vector because it can infect the cell. There are two ways that a vector can be inserted into the tissue. One of the ways is to be directly injected. The other way is to be given intravenously. Once the vector is in the tissue it is taken up by individual cells. In biology class we learned about how transfers cannot work if the thing being transferred is not compatible with the patient receiving the transfer. In class we also learned about diseases and how some of them are caused by genetic disorders and that gene therapy is one of the ways to treat …show more content…
One of those things is that there is a lot of potential uses for gene therapy. Gene therapy has not reached its full potential yet. Another pro to Gene therapy is it can replace defective cells. Throughout human history there has always been genetic disorders and with gene therapy it is possible to fix the disorder. If someone has a lethal genetic disorder through gene therapy it is possible to save their life. Gene therapy also has the potential to eradicate some diseases.
Gene therapy also has a lot of things some people consider bad. Some people are worried that gene therapy might be used to modify human capabilities. If gene therapy were to get into the wrong hands and they used it to enhance human capabilities and create super humans it could be very dangerous. Another thing that some people are worried about is that gene therapy could damage the gene pool. It is possible that gene therapy could permanently change the gene pool.
PCR stands for polymerase chain reaction and was first developed by a women named Kary Mullis in the nineteen eighties. There is five components that a PCR reaction requires. PCR is used to amplify pieces of DNA. PCR can make billions of copies of DNA. PCR is also used to diagnose diseases. Many people use PCR every
