Gene Therap Herapy Pros And Cons

What is one thing that people would like to see a little less of in the world? Most people would agree that the world would be a far more enjoyable place if there was less pain and suffering. Specifically, if there was less disease. People do not wish disease upon themselves, loved ones, or anyone for that matter. Although, medicine has evolved tremendously over the past century, there are still many bodily conditions that are yet to be treated. Thankfully, new advancements in technology and medical research are evolving in the twenty-first century. The medical technology, gene therapy, has been introduced within the past few decades and shows potential to be an effective method to cure some previously incurable genetic diseases. The necessity of gene …show more content…

This modification of the gene therapy procedure mimics one originally used with some accomplishment by a discrete group of scientists. The patients who benefitted the greatest were also the youngest, as well as a baby boy, diagnosed with ADA SCID at ten months old after a major illness. Gene therapy has had slight accomplishment treating illnesses. Success has been pushed back by quite a few complications, including: problems getting working genes into the specific cells where they are needed, getting working genes into enough cells and at the right rate to produce a physiological effect, the transfer organism entering unintended cells, and regulating gene expression (Phelan 2015). Furthermore, more than one faulty gene may cause a disease, or the gene causing a disease may be…

"Humans have long since possessed the tools for crafting a better world. Where love, compassion, altruism and justice have failed, Germline will not succeed" - Gina Maranto Germline Gene Therapy is when DNA is transferred into the cells that produce reproductive cells, eggs or sperm. This therapy allows for the correction of genetic disease, any manipulation to the germline would be transferred to future generations. Though Germline Gene Therapy has many benefits it's not ethical. Germline Gene Therapy involves the modification of germ cells (gametes) that will pass the change on to the next generation, with Germline Gene Therapy genes could be corrected using the egg or sperm being used to conceive, because every cells descends from the fertilized…

In this paper, the parts of Duchenne’s that will be covered are the method of transmission, statistics about Duchenne’s in the population, the pathophysiology, the body systems effected, signs and symptoms, age of onset, treatment/therapy options, psychological factors, prognosis, prevention techniques, ethical considerations, and how genetic counseling may be utilized for patients.…

Good morning, today I am going to discuss the use of Gene Therapy on Muscular Dystrophy, and how Human manipulation of genes may be a dangerous endeavour because of the uncertainty of safe practices and the myriad of ethical issues that present both for present-day and future society. Gene Therapy is a controversial treatment for diseases as technology is not completely advanced to fully trust the results to come out successful on every disease and for every person. Although gene manipulation causes some uprise to the public on whether it is safe enough to use on humans, it has been proven in previous studies that gene therapy has been helpful to treat or prevent disease in people, and has majorly helped current research. In genetic modification,…

Gene therapy is an experimental technique that uses genes to treat or prevent disease. In 1991 a man named Jesse Gelsinger died from a clinical trial for gene therapy. The scientist and people in charged were fired. This was just the beginning of gene therapy. In present gene therapy has helped many people.…

The “Bubble Boy” gene therapy experiment is one of the experiments on gene therapy. Gene therapy is still a moral debate to this day, some people beg the question if it’s okay to use gene therapy or what would it do to the human body which are all great questions. The discussion will be on whether the “Bubble Boy” gene therapy experiment was ethical or not and if the treatment was worth the risk. Basically the “Bubble Boy” experiment was on children suffering from the bubble boy disease which is a severe combined immunodeficiency that can possibly lead to death (Vaughn, 260). Sixteen children suffered from this disease so the researchers decided to try out the new treatment on them, they received gene therapy for nine years (Vaughn,260).…

Even with all of these concerns there are many benefits that gene therapy can offer. The first benefit is that people will be able to return to their lives disease free. This could extend people’s lifespans by several years (depending on the disease) and, in many cases, remove debilitating side effects from medication that they would take to offset their disease. In an experiment involving macaque monkeys was performed in which the monkeys were given a neurotoxin that created the same symptoms as those exhibited as Parkinson’s Disease. Some of the monkeys then received gene therapy giving them three genes that are responsible for producing dopamine.…

Do you think a plant, animal, or even a human can be cloned? If so, would you be a support or oppose it? Genetic Cloning has many titles; from human cloning, Reproductive cloning, Therapeutic cloning or even Research cloning. They all mean the same thing, which is the process in which a gene of interest is located and copied out of DNA extracted from an organism. Genetic Cloning has been going on for years, ever since 1981.…

Imagine living in a world where there was a cure for cancer and genetic diseases. Although it may sound impossible, it has already been done. With gene therapy, which is a technique where a gene that is either defective or missing is replaced with healthy ones through genetic engineering, doctors are able to treat people with cancer and immunodeficiencies. Immunodeficiencies are, “Rare but life-threatening genetic diseases that severely compromise the integrity and function of the immune system” (Kumar et al. 1-2).…

Gene therapy held many possible promises when found in the beginning of the 1990’s. “Gene therapy was the answer to what ailed us” (The Gene Hunters). Gene therapy is defined as, “The application of genetic engineering to the transplantation of gene into human cells in order to cure a disease caused by a genetic defect, as a missing enzyme” (Dictionary.com, 2005). This special field of medicine still holds promise for treating some types of genetic diseases, instead of just discovering their presence.…

So to ensure the patient get the safest treatment, the scientist must accept all the responsibility of the procedure so that irrational risks can be prevented. In a nutshell, gene therapy is a very vital method for treating patient with disease especially genetic disorder. From this research, gene therapy can be seen as the new revolutionary technique advancing in the genetic engineering to treat the diseases. Gene therapy has been studied as a potential treatment for genetic disease since the 1980s. The goal of gene therapy is to help correct genetic disease by providing a functioning copy of the gene to make up for the genetic defect. In the laboratory a functioning copy of the gene is packaged into a lentiviral vector, this is a modified virus that acts as a transport vehicle for the functioning gene. The lentiviral vector delivers the functioning copy of the gene into stem cells taken from the individual. The gene is then inserted inside the DNA of these cells.…

So, think of a future in which an individual could understand the sicknesses or disabilities they could suffer from in their lifetime and what could be done to prevent it. Although there has been many alternatives created to prevent such cancers and diseases, genetic engineering, also known as gene therapy, would be the best method for the medical field to use for lives affected by cell mutations. Genetic engineering is the manipulation of the DNA of an organism to alter characteristics and traits. This modification…

Every year many people die due to a rare disease or disorder since a cure has not been found yet. Rare diseases and disorders are fairly deadly and studies with gene therapy have allowed for a cure. A severe inherited blindness called Leber congenital amaurosis was treated with gene therapy. Not only were the tests successful for the patients but when one eye was treated with gene therapy, the second untreated eye naturally started to benefit from the first eye’s treatment. Similarly, genetic therapy has been able to help cure or reverse cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure which affects 5 million people each year.…

Gene editing is the alteration of genes in germ cells which become either sperm or eggs and are inheritable to future generations. Genetic editing has been used in agriculture to enhance crops, it is now being explored in humans too. This technology could potentially eradicate genetic diseases and prevent future generations from passing it on. Gene editing is done through the CRISPR-Cas9 system, where the embryo is edited to the desired outcome. It identifies and attacks the viral DNA and then it changes the targeted DNA strand that can be replaced or turned off.…
