It is a fact that if you are a woman in the workplace, whether in the private or public sector, you will most likely be paid less than your male colleague. This issue of a gender wage gap hurts women and families and ultimately the economy. Create poverty issue: In 2011, Statistics Canada’s Census of Population counted 9,389,700 census families, where among them 1,527,840 are lone-parent families and seven out of eight of these family heads are female (Portrait of). Furthermore, Statistics Canada reported that one third of these lone-parent families were living in low-income situations where annual family income averaged $18,170. The research also showed lone-parent families in general earned 50% less than couple-family income levels, with $37,900 compared to $79,530 (Family Characteristics). According to The Great Gatsby Curve, a theory introduced by Alan Krueger, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors, greater levels of income inequality will likely influence the next generation into following their parents’ wealth status (The Great Gatsby Curve). This means that if income inequality issues such as the gender wage gap persists, or were to worsen, there is a high probability that there is potential for a great increase in low income individuals with the upcoming generation following their mothers into poverty.
